code reader

where do i get a code reader for an 84 crossfire. and do i even need it . some cars have a way of reading it in the car dose this have that.

Office Depot! You can pick up a whole box of code reading paper clips for 99¢. Then send away for your FSM (Factory Service Manual) that will show you how to extract the codes, how to interpret the codes, and how to trouble shoot them. A code for a certain circuit, such as the EGR circuit or the MAF circuit, doesn't necessarily mean that the EGR valve or the MAF is bad. Once you know where the code came from, you can use the trouble shooting charts in the manual to track down the cause.
