The numbering of cylinders on a Chevrolet V8 is as follows:
Cylinders on drivers (left) side of car starting from the front of the engine: 1, 3, 5 &7
Cylinders on passenger side (right) starting from the front of the engine: 2, 4, 6, &8

I do not know if this applies to all GM engines.

Jakers,
If you stand on the drivers side the front plug is #1, then the #2 cyl. is directly across (front on passenger side) from it. Now come back to drivers side for #3 (second from front) and continue............

2 4 6 8
front
1 3 5 7
