1989 computer chip
1989 was the last year GM used the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, which simply put, measured the amount of air the engine was taking in then used that information to determine how much fuel to deliver. In '90, they switched to the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor setup which used look-up tables to determine the amount of air the engine was taking in based on manifold pressure (among other inputs). Although both accomplished the same goal, the ECU programing between these two systems was considerably different.
If you're looking for a chip for your '89, check out the scan and tune section of the forum. You'll find more than enough information, and you can find individuals that will burn one for you.
