I know the stock L98 calls for 5W-30, but the everyone I've asked said thats not the right weight for a new engine. What weight shoud I go with and what kind? I was leaning towards Mobil 1 5W-30 but was told to wait on that. Also, what filter do you guys use?

I run 5-W30 full synthetic year round.

I have heard that it's better to use petrolium based oil for the brake in period; not sure what weight though. Maybe you could ask your engine builder or supplier or check with a cam mfg.

I agree with Jeff.....use Mobil 1 10-30 in your state of Tn. It gets cold there, granted, but not not below zero....right? That's what I'm running here in Texas.
Delco filters are fine. I've always been a Fram guy, but just get a quality one and not something the corner lube shop throws on.

Ditto that... I always broke my motors in on regular oil, then switched to synthetic after 3K.

How about 10W-40 Castrol till the next change, then Mobil 1 10W-30?

I am going to end up with a very similar setup. I intend on dino oil break in, then a shift to Mobil 1. Prolly a 50/50 blend of 20W50 and 5W30. I think the straight 5W30 Mobil1 allowed some wear over the past 10,000 track miles. I think a bit more viscosity will help the longevity in my situation.

Aside from the oil discussion, what all did you do to the components that you installed on the ZZ4 shortblock? Were there any gotchas in the change over of your parts/sensors etc to the ZZ4? Did you replace your clutch?

h rocks, I didn't install or build my engine, had my uncle who owns a Corvette resto shop do it, but I can tell you that most of the parts should hook back up snice the ZZ4 is like the L98 design (I think). Sorry for not being able to help, im just a 16 year old :jester :chevy

Use 10W40 for the break in period.
Then use alighter weight and type of your choice.I always use delco filters.
As long as ya change the oil on time, the engine will be fine.

I am using 10w-40 Penzoil DINO for breakin. Soon I am switchin to 10w-30 Mobil One syntech. My original 108 k motor was so clean on inside from a steady diet of Mobil One I couldn't beleive it. Never seen such a clean old motor.
As for my left over zz4 parts, they are still in garage and for sale in forum parts C3. Was an ideal swap, except for minor mods (grinding) to one bolt at 10:00 on the timing chain, switching to short water pump, Using old distributor, and swapping carb intake for a SuperRam. Stock intake, I was told would have to wallow/angle the center intake bolts.

I use 30 weight for the initial startup and then go to dino 10W-30 for the next 1000 miles. You can use synthetic if the cylinder walls are honed the same way they are at the factory. The dino oil is necessary to allow the rings to seat. I guess they don't seat as quickly with synthetics.
