Default L98 fell flat on its face!

I took my 88 to the track for the first time. Stock bore and stroke, 68000 miles, Auto with a TCI 2,000 rpm stall convertor, B&M shift kit, 3:07 rear. K&N filter w/ open style cover, Relocated the air intake temp sensor to the air box,d"screened MAF 52mm T-body, Ported intake plenum, TPIS runners,Bigmouth intake ,26LB injecters, Comp cams cam Intake-.500 EX-510, Magnum roller rockers and lifters 1.5 ratio. Stock heads that were barely milled, very mild port job. new guides, machined for new springs as per Comp Cam specs. Valve seats were done, {3 angle valve job} long tube headers, flowmaster y & mufflers,Chip from Alvan PCM for less. Stock distributer w/ msd coil, 9* base timing. No emissions. Im sure I forgot something anyway. I had constent .35-.41 Reaction times. DID NOT SPIN THE TIRES OFF THE LINE. and could only run a best of 93.79mph @14.507 at the 60' 2.015 at 330 5.977 1/8 9.298@ 74.16mph at 1000' 12.137. There were Neons running faster than me!!!! MADE ME SICK. Car did not spit, sputter, miss, ect.. Anyone have any ideas? I know that the car should run just under 100mph as car& driver that year. What kind of times are you guys running? Mods? Stock?

With k& N filter, and 1.6 rr's my best was 13.98 @ 94 or 95 mph if I remember correctly. That was at Race City here in Calgary. That was before the Headers were added.

It was also your first time, how many runs did you do?? My first time out is was run in the 15's myself for the first 2 or 3 runs. Then the times started coming down.

May need to get that one on a dyno and see whats up, even with those 60' times it should be running faster.

Mine did a 13.9x stock

Completely stock mine had a best of 14.225 @ 95.06 mph. I've added put new cylinder heads and headers on for this year but have yet to take it to the track due to some issues.

Sounds like your mods are very similar to mine.

I trap at 107mph and can run 13.0 all day.
My best time was a 12.8

What is your A/F ratio.

26lb injectors are pretty big for your setup. I'm running only 24lb.
Get some data for Alvan and see if can tweek his tune a little.

you would be surprised how much a tune can change things for the better.

Check for stored codes - I forgot to get rid of the code when I set my timing and the car didnt perform as expected, cleared the code and it was good to go.

My stock 85 ran a best of 14.99 and barely hit 90 mph in the 1320 six years ago when I first purchased it. I really don't know what level of mechanical shape the engine was in but it only had 59,xxx on the clock at that time. I have since done EXTENSIVE mods and I just ran my best 12.7 at 112mph a few weeks ago with Dunlop street tires. I did not worry much back then because it was only rated 230bhp from the factory anyway.

But apparently there are a lot of guys out there running very fast "stock" L98 C4's.....

I run Orlando all the time...you have two problems...your 60' time and the weather...unless you are making real big power, a 2.01 short time will kill your ET....if you ran recently, the weather has been miserable...hot and humid like crazy...last weekend I raced Orlando and it was 90* with 85% humidity at 7 PM..the DA was 3700!...my car went 13.90's....

To give you an idea how much our bad air kills our times, my car with no changes went 13.20' all day up in Richmond at the national challenge back in Feb...the air was cold and the DA was real low...don't be concerned with what others run..I promise you the air they are running in is incredibly better than ours...we consistently have the worst in the country, by far, other than the colorado and utah guys...I have seen quite a few guys from up north come down and scratch their heads when they run 2 to 5 tenths slower just due to the DA...

Your next chance at decent times will be in late Nov. to Feb. if you can catch a cool day to race....not to worry...

Something is up there. I ran a 14.21@98.5 when my car was stock! Full exhaust got me down to the 13.6x@101.

I would question "Chip from Alvan PCM for less." Is there a stock chip that you could borrow or do you have a spare?

As long as the coolant was below 180 degrees, my bone stock L98 used to run 13.80s @ 100 mph in warm humid FL weather. Dunno what caused you to run that low.

Maybe thats why I couldnt break the 14's. It was about 95* outside and my temps were around 200* or higher. Not easy keeping that thing cool.
