Default 90 AC is Dead..Codes?

I seem to recall seeing a thread on the codes the automatic climate control can give. My compressor is not engaging and the light is flashing on my controler when I crank the car and when I try to turn the AC on.

Can someone hook me up with the info on the controller's diagnostics?

And will unhooking my battery for a period of time reset the codes in the system?

Thanks! It is a little hot here in Georgia!!

Turn the ignition to run.
In the upper right area of the Heater/AC controls, press the fan up arrow and the down arrow at the same time for 5 seconds.

-00 will display in the LCD. (System parameter)
To examine system parameter errors, press the Auto fan button once.
09 indicates low freon.

Disconnecting the battery and reconnecting will clear any codes.

Thank you.

I forgot to mention that prior to this the compressor would disengage at idle and re-engage once the car started moving. I was unable to get underneath to check, but I am thinking the fan may not be kicking on at the radiator.

Any thoughts? I will run outside now and check the codes.

It is throwing an 09 code.

I have R12. Any suggestions where I can get the connectors to put this stuff in?

If it's a slow leak you can top it off but you need to take the test online to purchase R12.

Get your certificate/card so you can purchase R12. You print a temporary certificate out and they mail you a permanent card.

http://www.epatest.com

You can purchase 12, 14 oz cans of R12 on e-bay for around $20.00.

You need a R12 can tap for around $20.00.
You need manifold gauges cheap set $40.00.

You need to find the leak.
For AC parts and tools these guys are good.

The fan or fans should come on when AC pressure hi side reaches 190psi.

DTC 09 sets if the clutch cycles more than 8 times over a 1 minute period of time.

Not a great idea to dump gas in it without fixing the leak - particularly on an 17 year old car. As the gas has leaked out, some of oil has gone with it. Once the oil is gone, the compressor is going to seize leading to costly repairs - even if you do it yourself. Common leak areas are the shaft seal - look on the hood above the compressor for oil - and the Evaporator - better to let a shop take 2 seconds checking that out with an electronic leak detector. Once you get the leak fixed, put in a new Dryer and the right amount of oil for any components replaced, then vacuum and recharge. That should keep it together for a couple more years.
