Any one had this problem on a 1987 vert. Occasionally there is a very loud "squeal" and the engine does not turn. Next try of the key usually works starter. My guess is the starter gear is not engaging the flywheel. Any one know of other possible reasons? I read somewhere about shimming needed to get alignment. Any ideas appreciated.
How old is the starter? shimming is necessary sometimes especially (at least in my case) with a new starter, my new one squealed shortly after installation even though I used the original shims and it quit after a short break in. But if your starter is old I'd say it's close to replacement time. I've also heard they can cause damage to the flywheel teeth.

Yep and Yep. If it's new, it probably needs shimming - If it's old it's time for a new one.
The squeeling is caused by non engagement of the starter gear with the flywheel ring gear and it is damaging to both. You likely have a starter solenoid that is not pulling hard enough to engage the starter gear into the flywheel ring gear. I would pull the starter and fix whatever is the cause and not use the starter until repaired.
