Odd suffix code
The engine came out of a Chevy Caprice, but no one seems to remember what year the Caprice was. The engine was a new replacement for the Caprice and the car was only driven for about 8 months.
I can't read the Casting number because the engine sits too far back in the car. (I'll have to try the 'mirror' trick later and see if it's readable)
The only thing I can read on the back is GM 5.7 LG SGI.
So far so good. It's a 350. Just what I need.
Now the odd part. The number stamped on the pad behind the water pump is VO927UPB.
Now I know that this engine was made in Flint on September 27, but the UPB code makes no sense according to every website I've looked on. The only 'B' codes they list are for a big block 454 or a 305, which I know this is not.
And yes, I did read it right. I stripped the paint off just to be sure.
None of the sites have it listed.
I'm trying to determine if this engine is usable in my 84.
Anyone have any idea why the 'UPB' suffix would not be listed or possibly what it is?
