Default Cam Question

Which is better, the hotcam, or a cam with

dur. - 270/276
dur. @ .50 - 218/224
lift - 495/502
Centerline - 114

I am looking for a cam that won't really give it a rough idle, I want it to run smooth.

In a 350" motor the hotcom will still definitely have some lope to it. The cam you mention should be relatively tame - or about as large as you can go while having a near stock idle. It will be down on hp from the hotcam though.

The 114 degree overlap with that cam is high. You're looking at a higher stall TC (with an added cooler) to run it on the street, and even then with greatly reduced idle vacuum.

What about the idle/performance for this comp cam, compared to the GM "HOT" Cam? Ive heard its a really nice grind.

114 is the Lobe Separation Angle (LSA) not degrees of overlap. A wider (higher numerically) overlap will provide a *better* idle (than a narrower lsa).

The cam you mentioned is commonly referred to as the CC305, and has similar characteristics to the Hot Cam - with slightly more top end and slightly less mid-range.

How much hp loss would I see if I don't get the Hot Cam. I was looking to do it with heads but I only have money for the cam and roller rockers. The car will be a daily driver, and a lot of highway driving at high speeds and city driving too. Would a hot cam affect the drivability and reliablility? Thanks, Suke.

What cam are you looking for? Give me a ring on the rollers and the cam and such. We can help you pick your cam and match it to what you are looking for.
Thanks,
