Hi Guys... 94 LT1 with MN6 using $EEB. It had a Hypertech program installed years ago (for fans, tires and gear ratio) and it works just fine. Made some engine mods and decided to update the tune. I have Tunerpro and WinFlash, so here is what I did. (question is coming!) I read the Hypertech tune using Winflash, no errors. Then I modified the bin file using Tunerpro and $EEB definitions. Then I attempted to reflash (write) the PCM with WinFlash, which completed properly, no errors, but the fans came on, the Service Engine light flashes several times a second, and the PCM is locked up. Does anyone know if Hypertech has some sort of copy protection? I know about the Hypertech being locked to a single VIN, but that was not changed, and I did not use the Hypertech Programmer in any of this. I also know about replacing the flash chips to fix the lockup. So again, anyone know more about the Hypertech internal software and whether they purposely have made it copy protected? Long winded, Thanks, Mark. . .. PS: After this happened, I did a hex compare of the original 94 bin and the unmodified Hypertech bin. I expected they would be different in the table and constants areas but i also found about 1Kbytes that were different in "undefined" areas that look like code. The Hypertech bin had mostly $FF where the Original bin had the code? This could be the problem, but I would like to associate it with some purposeful reason!
Can't help directly, as I haven't used Hypertech - however, rumor had it that after
flashing with a Hypertech you had to use the same machine to set the ECM back to
'stock' configuration to get rid of the 'Hypertech Lock' on the EEPROMs. Then you
could use a normal flash/editor for subsequent modifications.
Dunno where in the s/w Hypertech puts the 'lock', but IIRC the 94+ ECMs have two
EEPROM memory chips to clear.
There is some discussion on the C6 Tuning board about Hypertech locks.
TJWong - who posts on this board - may have more direct information on the 94 ECM.
At one time I think he offered the service of dismounting the EEPROMs and completely
clearing them - that was the only way to get a brand new, fresh bin loaded onto a
locked (or failed) flash.
Thanks DoctorJ. I know about the Vin Lock, but I thought it was via the code int the Hypertech Programmer itself. My suspicion is that the Lock (copy protect) is also in the flash code, like you implied!
I have replacement chips with the communications software already flashed, but I want to be certain that a new flash with a different bin will work before I have another lockup. Mark
About three years ago a friend brought me his car that had a Hypertech Program in it. He used it to correct his speedo gears and fans. We later put a heads and can package on it. I did the dyno tuning on it and flashed his PCM with no problems using WinFlash. We did not put the old stock program back in the PCM. BTW, it was a '94 LT1.
Well Red Sleeper....Thanks for the info. That is not what I wanted to hear, since it implies that I have some other type of problem. Anyway I am waiting for the PLCC sockets to finish the PCM repair. When done, I will try and reflash the Original LT1 bin using WinFlash. If it works, I have a modified "original" LT1 bin that I will try. I did a hex compare between the unmodified Hypertech bin and the Original LT1 bin, and, ignoring the differences in the Tables and Constants/Switches, there were about 1kBytes that were different. Not only different but corrupted! So hopefully that was/is my problem, we'll see. Thanks all! Mark
I picked up one on ebay, for my 95 LT1, was told is was brand new, it was VIN LOCKED, i called hypertech, they told me that i had to send it back to them along with $225 for them to UN-LOCK it...
