Default Injector replacemant ????

I've been told my car has a bad injector and that all injectors should be replaced. Is this true? If so, why change ones that are working?

I guess the assumption is that if one goes, the others will follow. Depending upon mileage, new injectors may make a noticeable difference.

I would suggets you check the injectors with an electrical meter. Easy to do just remove the electrical conector and check resistance. If I remember correctly it should be 12 - 16 oms but check the repair manual to make sure.

Two years ago, I thought I had water in my gas tank. So, I used Valvoline Water Remover. But a Chevy mechanic told me I shouldn't use the water remover because it has a chemical that can damage the injectors. Sometimes I feel a pulsation from the engine while I'm driving 45 to 55 mph. I don't know if this is from the injectors.

I see you have a 1990 coupe, and so do I. I know a 1990 Corvette owner in Toronto, and he had to have his injectors replaced several years ago.

You might check Ekler's for prices on injectors. They have rebuilt or non-OEM injectors.

The job to swap injectors is not easy. There is a good bit of work to get to them. There are gaskets and o-rings that will need to be replaced also. I would swap all of them with new ones. If one fails, the rest are not far behind.

Who told you it has a bad injector, and why do you believe them? Were any tests done?

Well another option is to pull them out and send to Rich @ cruzinperformance, for cleaning, and refurbish, cheaper than new ones, he's good, fast and highly recommended on the forum (you can search and find plenty of posts concerning this) as well as how to do the job, a FSM is a definate plus here, and since your doing that, replace gaskets, clean the TB and IAC reset and tune and you should be good to go...
but first:
Test your injectors to see if thats really your problem, again the search feature will get you info on testing, etc.

An ohm test will tell you very little about them, only if one of the coils is damaged. There are a bunch of other things that can go wrong with them that this test doesn't cover.

After many different conversations regarding FI's, my opinion is to replace the factory injectors with new units at 100K miles. I have used the Bosch pink tops for three years and 26K miles without incident.

I contacted Rich at vinnes87 suggestion and sent a photo of the injectors. Turned out the original owner had replaced some of the OEM units with aftermarket parts. Rich suggested that I start over with all the same parts. Saved me a bundle of money by making a phone call.

I see that you have a 90 model car by reviewing your profile. Here is a note from Rich Jensen at Cruzin Performance (reputable injector service) on your injectors:

Subject: Re: Need Injector Help!!!

Hi Bob,

The problem you currently have is that from 1989 through 1991 on the L98 engines GM installed Multec injectors. These injectors have one of the highest failure rates of any injector ever installed. It's not a matter of "if" they are going to fail, it's simply a matter of "when" they will fail. That is why some of your injectors look differently than the others. Some of them have obviously already failed and were replaced. Because of their design they cannot be repaired so the only solution is to replace them.

You can try to find some of the same injectors to use as replacements however they will likely eventually fail also so a better alternative is to replace them with an aftermarket set of replacement injectors or find some of the earlier Rochester injectors that were used from 1986 though 1988 on the L98's. These were a Bosch design injector and they don't have the problems that the Multecs do.

I don't sell any injectors so I can't help with supplying replacements but if you do find a set of the earlier design injectors I can service those and they have a very good track record of long life and serviceability. The part numbers you would be looking for are: 1986 = 5235211, 1987 and 1988 = 5235302. These are the part numbers that are on the injectors themselves. They are not the part numbers that would be listed in a GM parts catalog.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but that's just the way the Multec injectors are.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more info or have additional questions.

Rich Jensen

The resistance test (cold and hot) will test for the shorted wire turn problem as this is the main issue with 89 -91 Multec injectors.

I installed injectors on my 89 vert (twice) The first time it took me about 6 hours and thats with me having over 35 years twisting wrenches in a mechanical machine environment. I guess I was afraid of breaking something. My point here: When I found out the new installed injectors leaked, it only took me about 45 minutes to take them out. I bought the second set from B & B Auto parts in the Bronx NY $400. bucks for the set. This time I installed them and had the car running in less than an hour. That was in April, and the car is running better than when I first bought it 9 years ago!
(is it OK to mention where I bought the injectors? I am not associated with them in any way, I'm just happy with the injectors

Let me guess, repair shop told you that. They just happen to be able to fix you up for say $800 to $1000. Buy a multimeter and test them. If you replace them don't use 1989 OEM, they are not the best.

Yep, get a $20 Mulitmeter and test them yourself before listening to the shop. It will take about 10 minutes to ohm the coils. If any show less than 10 ohms OR if they do not ohm very close to one another....find a new set. If one or more are bad, replace them all. You will have to shop around for a new set, because if the injectors you have are stock, they are not servicable.

You can also check to see if any leak. Do a search for "leaky injectors". I have typed a procedure a few times this month.

Don't ever buy Accel injectors. There are alot of reports about them failing right out of the box.

Send an e-mail to Howard at injectors4u@aol.com He will set you up really good. I just received 8 injectors for my 89 L98. The car runs great and the total was $212 including shipping to Hawaii!!!

The rebuild injectors are matched for flow and resistance with a 1 year warranty. It worked for me.
