Have you tried using a Puller, like you are supposed to do it? It's not Always necessary - sometimes you can pull on the wheel hard enough to get it off the taper on the shaft, but usually the wheel has been tightened down onto that taper hard enough that a steering wheel puller will be the only answer. Also - with the telescoping column you need a bolt to screw into the extend locking shaft (whatever the official term is for the small central shaft that locks the telescoping section) to prevent it from sliding...
If you are strong enough and don't want to rent or buy a puller, you could just grab both sides of the wheel and plant your feet firmly on the floor and 'standup' and rock back and forth, pulling as hard as you can.
Just make sure you hold on tight, 'cause when that sucker lets go, you could end up in the back of the car..
BTW.. You should leave the nut loosely threaded on the shaft...So you don't go flying!
Believe it or not, mine came off rather easily after soaking the center stud with good ole WD-40. As the directions state, it does in fact penetrate. Amazing stuff that WD-40.
Once you get the horn button off by squeezing the top and bottom and the horn wire connector removed, remove the 2 screws retaining the telescoping lever in place and remove the lever. There may be a C clip to remove also. A puller is a great convenience, but I threaded the steering wheel retaining nut back on until it was flush with the top of the threads and wacked it with a hammer while pulling out on the steering wheel. Came right off. Do not hammer on the threaded post without the nut on there or you will damage the threads.
I am now struggling with the darn horn wire spring. Horn wants to toot all the time.

You CAN get it off through sheer brute force.
You CAN get it off by whacking it with a big hammer.
...but I wouldn't recommend doing either; too much chance for damaging the steering column.
I would recommend buying/borrowing a steering wheel/damper puller or using a short length of 1" steel or aluminum and two long bolts (you could make this for less than $2).
Air chisel on low vibrates it right off without damage.
Doing mine sicked. That telescopic column is BS. I had to make a tool
to depress the lock plate to install an aftermarket hub, because the stupid telescopic BS wanted to go airborne.
Also, some write-ups mention a spring compression tool of sorts, is it needed? Thanks
I don't think that that tool will work on your Vette. You will need a spring compressor to get the clip off. Don't use a hammer. Get the right tools and the job is easy. Here's the right tool: http://www.autozone.com/in_our_store...lock_plate.htm
