91 C4. Need a scanning tool but I'm not sure which one I need. Anyone have any recommendations. What scanning tools are compatible with my year exactly. I see a lot of OBD2 scanners...but not sure if that will work. I do have a laptop and wouldn't mind just buying the connector and software as well. Can someone point me to where I can get one for pretty cheap. Thanks.
Read the FAQ at the top of the scan and tune page, it will tell you everything you need to know. Your year or car has an OBD1 so you can't use a scanner to program. You will need a laptop with a scanning program like datamaster or Tuner Pro to scan your car. You can make the ALDL cable for a few dollars if you want. Here is a schematic
Not mentioned in the FAQ is the decision on whether to stick with an older serial port (COM1 etc.) configuration or take the 'plunge' into USB. (Serial ports vanished from new laptops about five years ago.)
Look at the available ports on your laptop then look at software that will support that type of port. Once those choices are made then choose a cable/adapter.
Operating system is a factor as well. Some software plays better with Win98SE and not much has been checked out with Vista.
I choose an older laptop with a serial port but it had Win-XP. I bought a new hard disk for it ($45), loaded Win98se and it works great with an AKM cable!
