Default custom air cleaners

Has anyone hade a custom air cleaner for their car? I measured the space between the top of the radiator and the hood and we are giving up almost 1 inch if using the stock air cleaner housing. If you have made or bought something please post pics.

There are a few people that have made custom setups. By giving up almost one inch, I take this to mean you think the air filter housing should be larger? The size of the stock system is fine, it's size can support a hellva lot of HP.

phughes69,

It has taken me a while to get my customer air cleaner box to the point shown below in the pictures. It still slightly dimples up the hood so I have more work to do in the area where the silver tape is above the air filter. But at this time it will work for me at the next couple of track day and then over the winter I can work to make a better fitting air cleaner box. I plan to modify/re-make this one as well as make something that is C5/C6 like. My new engine required much more air than the stock 85 filter box would flow and I also no long use a Mass Air Flow (MAF) system. This allowed me to switch to the inlet duct from the 89 to 91 C4’s that did not have the MAF sensor. This is not a direct swap, the air clean box from those later C4’s will not fit the early C4’s because of the changes they made to the radiator position (maybe you already know this). Anyway here are the pictures, let me know if you have any question and I can try to answer them.

So I have made another air cleaner system for my track car. The one in the post above did not work to well. I made it from .040”T aluminum sheet which was not rigid enough. Also the fit was not that great. So I made a new version out of .060”T aluminum and it is similar to the C5/C6 style air bridge-air cleaner system. See the pictures below. Track testing will come in late May.

Nice job Vanspeed, I've been working on something like that for a while but it's still not ready yet. Are you letting in cold air from anywhere?

Thanks Hotred94. At this time I have not opened up anything to let cold air in front. I may some day open the area behind the front license plate and open up the front license plate cover. The draw back to doing this, as I see it, is letting all the air in the engine bay without an outlet for that air could create lift in the front. So as always trade offs.
