Went out in the garage to start my stock 1995, automatic tranny and upon turning the key, all the dash lights came on, gauges moved, fuel pump pressurized but got NO response from the starter. The starter did not click or nothing, battery is good and strong. Ran my errand in another vehicle and 3 hours later got back home and put the key in the 95 and she fired right up! Since I had other chores to do around the house I shut her off and hung up the key. Three days later I went out to go somewhere and she did the exact same thing, dash lights nice and bright, fuel pump OK but no response from the starter. Since I was in no hurry this time I put the battery charger on her and tried again, same results, NO response from the starter, everything else worked as it should. The battery is good and strong, the cables are tight and clean, removed the battery charger and went in and got a glass of ice tea. Fifteen minutes later after wondering what in the world could be the problem, I inserted the key again after making NO changes and she fired right up. All electrical items work, seats, windows, radio, antennia, lights. It is almost like all of a sudden she has decided to crank when she wants and take a nap when she wants. I appreciate your input.
Could be the vats...clean your keys where it has the metal chip in it.Make sure theres no grime on them especially the chip or resistor....which is the same thing in the middle of the key.
If the vats doesnt recognize the key it will disable the system for a few minutes. If the key is worn down, even the resistor in the key, have a new key made for it.
Thank You, I will make sure I carry BOTH ignition keys the next time I go to use her. The spare has been used once in the past 7 years and is kept in a zip lock bag, it should be clean. The thing that is really puzzelling about this is...... I never know when it is going to happen. She might fire right up at the house and then when I come out of the store she will decide not to crank, so I just sit and wait for her to change her mind and fire up.
