Default A/C and Air Pump delete

I am planning on removing my A/C system and my air pump I am just wondering if anyone has done this before, how big of a job this is, and what tools or parts I will need, also will there be any effect on the car from the removal of these parts. I also plan on removing the rest of the smog equipment and running a set of headers.

Did it recently...have the AC discharged by a shop/pro. There are good AC bypass/replacement pulleys on eBay. It REALLY cleans up the engine bay. The AC delete will hurt the resale value of the car, but if you don't use AC and don't foresee selling it, could be ok.

You will also save a bunch of weight off the front of the car which can be beneficial when it comes to performance.

I agree with Nitrous Sam, and I used an AIR delete pulley/bracket, wasn't too hard once I figured out I needed to slightly adjust/angle the alternator support bracket to get everything to fit.

OK.

This should work on your 86 if I remember correctly.
Based on engine config this works for 86 -88.
I did this to mine, an 88.

YOU MAY NOT NEED AN A/C DELETE PULLEY.

Remove A/C.
You then thread your serp belt without the A/C.
You will notice you now have to thread the serp belt through the tensioner BACKWARD.
That's OK. The tensioner does not care which way it spins.
Cut belt with new config. measure. Go to NAPA and buy new belt.
This really cleans up your engine bay.
You will need the AIR pump delete pulley.
I used the Breathless Perf. kit.

Good luck

My 85 is almost the same except I used a pulley from a 1988 Beretta, and a smaller belt:
1-Belt for non AC operation: Gates 4060710.
2-Pulley for non AC operation: GM 10044867 (1988 Beretta, without AC).

I eliminated the A/C and air pump, but used a slightly different approach

Still need to fab up a rear alt. bracket though.

Default bare neccessity

if you're planning to change out your water pump, why not just buy a water pump that turns in a clockwise direction, then get an adjustable rod with helm joints for your block to alternator. then measure for a s-belt. this advice was once in the forum archives.

sorry ultraviolet 70, didn't see your pics. can you adjust tension on adjusting rod out enough to use exhaust manifold to alternator bracket?

Not with the headers, it's going to take a custom bracket. I'm not driving the car right now, but the bracket isn't to difficult to make, it just takes a small piece of tube with the ends flattened and drilled attached to a stud off the third back header hole.

Here's a link to an old thread where I somewhat descirbe how I did this.

hello matt383 and others,
can you please tell me wheather or not this procedure of the a/c delete mod running the serpentine belt reverse thru the idler pulley will work on a 1991 vette please ?
you mentioned that it works on 86-88 model vettes .

would i still need to buy as GRX kindly said the # gm 10044867( 1988 beretta, with out a/c idler pulley) please ?

is in the pictures above a complete Beretta idler pulley and bracket or just the pulley by its self please ?

i can trim down my a/c bracket to retain the idler pulley,i have already measured what length belt i will need to use and run thru reverse way on the pulley.

i wonder if the idler pulley systems in the c4 vettes are the same or similar in how they adjust back and forth ?

to take the serp belt off on the earlier idler pulleys,do you still push down to remove the belt like the later model cars ?

any ideas please?
thank you
regards
shae

Default idler pulley

i reversed the s-belt on the idler pulley on my 91 with no problems. just had to make a couple of trips to parts store until i was satisfied with s-belt lenght. six rib s-belt is fine, although some were changing the pulley, where the smooth side of s-belt run on, to a grooved pulley. i've since decided to go in the direction of ultraviolet 70, for a cleaner look.

hi 91 steel blue,
thanks for your reply.
im glad to hear from you that you have done the same with ok results!
so you dont have know problems at all do you ?
i dont suppose you would have a picture of what you have do you please ?
what does your idler - a/c bracket look like now after modifying it?
do you think it is really neccesary to change idler pulley to a ribbed one ?
the belt wont wear too much on the standrd pulley will it ?
thank you

Default caution

for the most part, the comments and advice given on this forum are pretty good. please use caution and research everything you can before you start altering your car. i've been a member of this forum for a long time, but only post if i have a question or have hands on knowledge of a subject. and as you can see from my profile, i don't post much and am not trying to increase my posting status. with that, here is what i did regarding your questions. i used a sawz all with a metal cutting blade and cut the a/c bracket, leaving the supports for the idler arm intact. no need to change out to a grooved pulley. the hardest part was getting a s-belt that had a lenght that looked like it had the right tension with the idler pulley. i drove the car for about six months with no problems. i can now say that i really was'nt that happy with the look. it looked altered. i decided around two years ago to go over the car and it has been on jack stands since, i am in no hurry. if you plan on useing an idler pulley grx has a good example. if you want to eliminate your idler pulley, go with ultraviolet 70.
