The only way it comes off track is if the ribbon breaks. You can buy a replacement ribbon for ~$20 and gut the door and rivet in place. You'll still have a slooowwwww window, and probably end up breaking it again in a few years.
Your other option, which is highly recommended, is to upgrading to the 86L+ regulators.
I found this by searching earlier threads and it's just what we needed as we tackle the door.
Bullyj, ours was "off track" too but it's really a broken ribbon. I purchased a used late model regulator that we'll drop in as a replacement.
BTW, this is on our project 87 and it does have the old ribbon style window lift although almost everything I've read says the ribbon ended in mid 86 ...

Good to know. Sometimes these breakoff points aren't black and white, other times they are, but misinformation gets spread around. Obviously no one would have downgraded yours.
One interesting thing is, the wiring harness to the passenger side window had to be reversed, so there does have to be a cutoff point.
Thanks Guys. I looked at a couple of different sites, 270 was the cheapest I saw. I know this will sound Dumb but there not listed driver side and passenger side Ok so here's the dumb part which is my right and which is my left. that even sounds dumb to me
Well I drove up to Volunteer Vettes and ended up getting a new ribbon. Installing it was a pain. I ended up removing the glass and unbolting the lift assembly so I could drill out the 2 rivots and get the ribbon off. Installed in reverse order and made sure I had plenty of white lithium grease on the guide tube. Oh 2 days later I was walking thru Orielly's and saw the same ribbon package and it said for a Dodge.
