Thanksin advance,

The only way it comes off track is if the ribbon breaks. You can buy a replacement ribbon for ~$20 and gut the door and rivet in place. You'll still have a slooowwwww window, and probably end up breaking it again in a few years.

Your other option, which is highly recommended, is to upgrading to the 86L+ regulators.

CentralCoaster, thanks for the write up

I found this by searching earlier threads and it's just what we needed as we tackle the door.

Bullyj, ours was "off track" too but it's really a broken ribbon. I purchased a used late model regulator that we'll drop in as a replacement.

BTW, this is on our project 87 and it does have the old ribbon style window lift although almost everything I've read says the ribbon ended in mid 86 ...

Good to know. Sometimes these breakoff points aren't black and white, other times they are, but misinformation gets spread around. Obviously no one would have downgraded yours.

One interesting thing is, the wiring harness to the passenger side window had to be reversed, so there does have to be a cutoff point.

What is your vin #?

I'll have to go out and grab it, but I do remember the door sticker shows a build date of 08/86 (very early).

Left = driver's side; Right = passenger side.

Did you try a used parts place like Vette2Vette? Or try the parts section ... I bought mine from someone in parts and got a good deal

Just a follow-up regarding my '87

When we installed the new window lift, we were surprised to find holes for the new mechanism in the bottom of the door already!

The FSM indicates the following:
1987 coupes had the ribbon-style (old) window mechanism
1987 convertibles had the lift-style (new) window mechansim

Strange but true I guess

Well I drove up to Volunteer Vettes and ended up getting a new ribbon. Installing it was a pain. I ended up removing the glass and unbolting the lift assembly so I could drill out the 2 rivots and get the ribbon off. Installed in reverse order and made sure I had plenty of white lithium grease on the guide tube. Oh 2 days later I was walking thru Orielly's and saw the same ribbon package and it said for a Dodge.

I have been confused about that cutoff date too, as my 87 has the ribbon style. They both broke within 2 weeks of ownership.
