I am in the market for new tires for my 96. I don't want to replace the stock wheels at this time, however I would like to install wider tires to improve the look of the car. What is the widest tires that will fit my rims? Any recomendations would be greatly appreciated.
Your '96 should have 8.5" on the front and 9.5" on the rear. Stock tire sizes are 255/45/ZR17 front and 285/40/ZR17 rear. These sizes are the largest tread widths you can run on the stock rims if you go by manufactures recommendations (which I highly recommend). I will say the tread design can have a considerable effect on how wide the tires appear. I switched from Goodyear GSC EMT's (run flats) to Goodyear F1 GS-D3's and I think they look considerably wider. They handle and ride a lot better too, very quiet.
I second the vote for Goodyear F1 GS-D3 tires. One thing to check... If your 96 has the Z51 option, then it originally came with 275/40ZR17 tires on all 4 wheels.

question-no spare on a '96 or did you want to run expensive runflats.?
I'm very happy with my Firestone Wide Ovals. I got them from tirerack. Check out the reviews on tirerack.com. Lots of C4 drivers are very happy with the Firestones.

I use to roll with BF Goodrich G-Force but I heard so much about the Goodyear F1's that I just had to try them. All I can say is WoW, i love them... The look, the ride & no road noise, they are GREAT.
