Default The car JUST DIED!

I was sitting in the line for the car wash and my '93 vette just up and died. I tried to restart it but nothing. Every time I tried to use something electrical I would get a very faint dinging from the dashboard. It would ding 3 or 4 times and then stop. It did this even when I hit the brake pedal. No lights either so it would be the VATS. I even tried using my line lock that is hooked up directly to the battery and nothing.

Now here's the weird part. I jumped the car and it seems to be running fine. If anybody knows what this could be from I'm all for suggestions. I really don't want to be stuck somewhere for how ever long again.

Batterys don't just die intantly and then come back to life do they?

Try old school first and check the terminal conections. Batteries don't take a day off.

Probably the jump put pressure on the terminals getting a better contact.

Remove your battery cables (neg first) and clean the cable lugs, bolts, and the battery terminals and replace the cables (neg last). The dinging was the ign off/headlights on alarm which activates with too low battery voltage (not designed to do this, its just how it works). After you jump start the engine, the alternator supplies current to the car.

Yeah, what are you thinking taking a vette through a car wash?

I've been working on the car and the dryer dust and what not in the garage is horrible. I figured washing it would be better than looking like the hillbilly vette

I guess I can chalk it up to a fluke, but the battery cables seem ok, no corrosion or anything. Its just weird that it would go to absolutely nothing and then just fine.

You could have a defective joint where the battery cable is connected to the end lug. I would also look at the condition of the ground cable connection to the frame, it might be corroded and intermittent.

Has anyone ever had a car die on them from a bad battery connection (corrosion)? Mine have always run fine until I parked it, then it wouldn't start the next time I tried. I would suspect something else. I'd throw a voltmeter in the car and do some investigation next time it happens before jumping to see if I could find out what it is. I suppose losing ground could do it. Just never heard of it before.
