Hi folks, recently I was driving in New York City on the bumpy BQE. I then drove out to the silky smooth southern state parkway. I heard a rattling noise and thought that I was dragging debris under my car. When it was apparent it wasn't going away, I pulled over and to my dismay, the pan that holds the spare tire was dragging on the ground, and my spare was missing! I know for a fact that the single 5/8" bolt that holds the carrier and the tire were pretty tight, and the hangers were intact. I don't get it!!!!
My question is, is this a common problem?, if so, what are some YOUR solutions. For now I have left it off, and to be frank, I like the way the car looks without it. This is my daily driver and it is a 1996 LT-1. Thanks in advance.
You may already know this but... The rear tire provides extra support in case of a rear end impact. I took mine off also. I like the way it looks and it reduces weight. I never heard of anyone loosing a tire.
I wouldn't discount the possibility that somebody removed your spare while it was parked. This would have allowed the carrier bolt to be loose enough to vibrate off.
