Buying two qts. will do it. If I remember right, it's 1.8 qts. and this applies to the D36 as well as the D44. Don't forget the GM limited slip additive.
Changing the rear end gear lube is a pain, best bet is to get a "suction gun", looks like a grease gun, has a plastic hose about 3/8" dia. on one end, and a pull handle on the other (avail. at normal auto parts stotes),
Remove fill plug, it's a 3/8" allen wrench. Suck out as much of the old fluid as possible by inserting the plastic tube down deep and pulling on the handle of the suction gun. try to get plastic tube to the bottom of the differential housing. Do this unttil you can't get any more old fluid out.
Refill: full capacity is 1.42 liters (1.5 quarts) plus 4 ounces of GM anti-slip additive that you must purchase at a GM dealer for about $8 a bottle (4 oz. bottles)
It's hard to get all the old fluid out, so re-fill amount may be less than the 1.5 quarts, put in the "anti-slip additive" first.
Access to the fill plug is difficult, spillage will occur during filling, fill until it comes out the plug hole. Do not "overtighten" the fill plug when re-installing.
