Re: Can I try to fix this myself? Code 34 & Code 32 (Black87c4)
I would also still lean toward the IAC for your idle problem. They are also about $25 from a auto parts store and are very easy to replace. Granted your throttle body might need some cleaning but my bet is the IAC.
:flag
OK, so you think I've got TWO problems going on on parallel here? - the relays and MAF codes aren't related to the idle speed (or lack thereof)? Would the IAC set a code? I didn't even read up on that in the manual last night. Hmmmm, maybe it was an IAC problem all along and the MAF relays just happened to crap out yesterday AM...????
Re: Can I try to fix this myself? Code 34 & Code 32 (Juliet)
Its possable, a sticking IAC motor can cause a idle problem and wouldn't cause a code. Fix your codes first (hopefully just relays) and see if you still have the idle problem. A bad MAF can cause a idle problem as well, you'll just have to see if the relays fix it, you'll know pretty soon.
Re: Can I try to fix this myself? Code 34 & Code 32 (Black87c4)
He RUNS! :D Thank you thank you thankyou!!!! I figured I'd swap out one relay at a time to determine which one had died before I replaced them both. It was the relay closer to the center of the car which was the guilty culprit. The 'backup' replacement is on the shelf for the inevitable time when another one goes. ;) Victor Smiley now runs and idles on his own! What a concept. :p: I thought about swapping both, but the current service replacement has a different stamping on the top of the relay. I'm trying to get / keep this car as close to purist original as possible for future NCRS judging. I'll scan the pictures on the top of the relay this evening and maybe some of you can indeed confirm for me that the one with the 'cute little circuit printing' on it is an original part. If so, I'll add that to my need to scrounge around and find these used parts list.
Well, I'll drive the car around a bit today to see if any new codes pop up - and see what the idle speeds acts like out driving around with it in gear etc.... Plus I still do want to clean the TB etc... And golly, my engine bay needs some serious de-grunging in the nooks and crannies.
Re: Can I try to fix this myself? Code 34 & Code 32 (Juliet)
1. Do I need gaskets etc before I can put the TB back on or are they all reusable (assuming one doesn't tear etc).
2. Can Carb cleaner be used on the TB or do I need to get TB cleaner?
Thanks. ~Juliet

Im not sure of the durability of the gasget. If it were me, I would go ahead and replace.
About the carb cleaner?? I remember reading somewhere that there is a "coating" on the throttlebody that can be harmed by carb cleaner or other harsh cleaners.
I have always used TB cleaner. I only have 34,000 miles and dont remove the TB for cleaning. (once a year)
For you, I would suggest removal. you may have some heavy biuldup. :seeya
Re: Can I try to fix this myself? Code 34 & Code 32 (Phil-tha-Rush)
I was able to reuse my TB gasket. Others have had them tear. As far as Carb or TB cleaner.... I have used TB cleaner extensively on my TB. Both when it was on the car, sprayed lots down into the IAC hole, and when I was off, sprayed lots all over! I have seen many people post here about not doing that, especially on the IAC. I have sprayed down my IAC pretty heavily, both in the TB and out. I have not noticed any ill effects, my IAC still works, TB is cleaner. Maybe someone will post a detailed reason why using TB cleaner is better than carb cleaner, other than "Never use TB cleaner, it will ruin the special coating :nono: ", since that is all I have seen. Just my $.02, but there are several people who think using carb cleaner is tantamount to using a scrub brush to wash your car.
