91 - L98- no precats, muffler eliminators. Smell gas immediately after starting. Loads up at idle. Fuel mileage good. Injector resistance 17.9 to 18.5 ohms. Any Ideas?
I've got the same problem. I'm blame'n it on a leaking injector and I'm still running down all my vac leaks. Those two together is probably my problem but check your vac lines. Mine are getting brittle and breaking on me.
First thing I would look for is a vacuum leak. This introduces "false air" into the engine, which the ECM interprets as a lean condition and richens the mixture accordingly.
Put a vacuum gauge on the engine and tell us how many inches of vacuum you have at idle.

When you start, does it fire right up or do you get a strange shaking until the engine runs smooth? I had the shaking going on, my #3 injector was leaking. There was a strong gasoline odor coming out of the throttle body. To track it down I removed the spark plugs and at cylinder #3 I knew instantly by the smell coming out of the hole that it was leaking.
Half a bottle of "Red Line" Complete Fuel System Cleaner did the trick. Every tenth fill up or so the tank gets another shot.
Worked fine for me for the last 5k miles.

The ECMs not interpreting anything on start up. Open loop.....
Leaking injector, or leaking FPR. Pull the vacuum line off of it and make sure theres no fuel coming out of the nipple in the FPR.

If it loads up warm when idleing would it still be open loop? The last engine I tore down was a Ford Flat Head so I'm not familiar with the term FPR. What is it and where is it?

Fuel Pressure Regulator. Under the plentium right beside the distributor. Look for a small round device about 1 1/4 across with a vacume line running into it. Will look like a little top hat.

Yep....sorry, missed the "immediately after starting" part. Getting old sucks....not only can't hear anymore, can't read either.
