Default Replacing Brakes, Question.....

What is the proper procedure for "bedding" brake pads? I'm going to install new slotted rotors and new Hawk HPS brake pads and want to bed them correctly. I've searched some and can't find a thread that defines doing this.

Usually the box the brake pads come in has bedding directions. Some are different, most are 4 stops from 45 MPH, then 4 stops from 60 MPH, after that let the car cool for an hour.

Burnishing Instructions

After installing new brake pads, make 6 to 10 stops from approximately 30-35 mph applying moderate pressure.
Make an additional 2 to 3 hard stops from approximately 40 to 45 mph.
DO NOT DRAG BRAKES!
Allow 15 minutes for brake system to cool down.
After step 4 your new pads are ready for use.

That sounds about right. You want to get the brakes very hot, to the verge of smoking. I bed in my race pads(I know yours are street pads) 10 stops 30-5(I don't come to a complete stop to prevent pad transfer to the rotor)10 stops 45-5, then 60-5 stops until it is on the verge of smoking, then I drive it about 5 miles without applying the brakes(to cool) then park it until the brakes are cold. Hawk HPS are quisi dual purpose street/track pads and would probably benefit from an aggresive bed in. http://www.stoptech.com/tech_info/wp...contents.shtml

I'm currently using the set-up that you purchased. The bedding instructions are in the brake pad box (Hawk HPS).

GREAT!!!! Thanks for all the advice! I haven't purchased the pads yet, which is why I didn't realize the directions were on the box. I've installed MANY sets of oem replacement pads on MANY different makes and models over the years, but none of them ever had directions with them. I usually made 3 or 4 hard stops from about 45 mph then let them cool, but didn't know if that was the correct method for sure or not. I like the suggestion about not completely stopping to keep the transfer to the rotor minimal. I am always afraid of beginning to warp a brand new rotor. Thanks!!
