I successfully programmed my fob several months ago and it was working fine. One day it stopped working.
I follow the instructions in the manual for programming the fob:
1) Place your transmitter fob @ 10 feet or more away from your Corvette.
2) Get in, turn the key on, but do not start the engine.
3) Push the Trip/Odo button twice and within 5 seconds, push and hold the Fuel/Info button, until the PKE light comes on and remains on.
...only the PKE light never comes on. When I hold the Fuel/Info button, the display cycles through the fuel modes (DTE, mileage, etc.) as if I'm not in programming mode.
Yeah... I tried that. The pushbuttons on the fob stopped working too, so the I figured it was the battery. I replaced it. But that shouldn't stop the car from going into programming mode with fobs out of range.
I had the same problem last night... Then the car wouldn't even start afterwards. I pulled the battery last night. I took it to be tested this afternoon. Just got the call back that the battery is fine. They even put it in another vehicle and it worked great.
I thought the cause of the PKE light not coming on might be that my fob was too close. It was inside the house, near the door to the garage. I took the fob to a back bedroom, but of course that didn't solve my problem...
I was really hoping it was the battery. I'm interested to hear what else could cause your problem, and maybe it will help me fix mine. Once I get my car running again, that is.
I wonder if I triggered some kind of VATS deal? I did wait a few minutes and try again, but it didn't do any good. I cleaned my key a few days ago too. I'm hoping I can just install the battery and miraculously fix my no-start deal. (yeah, right) Then I can get back to my PKE programming.
Um... So maybe what I said is different from what you said. I think you could reprogram the fob as many times as you wanted. But you can only have three that open the same vehicle.
More than likely, your PKE module went out, I messed with this for a while and even changed the module only to have it go out again later. If it isn't giving you weird problems, I would just leave it alone. My $.02
Just as an FYI, on my car, if you attempt to program a PKE three times without the PKE light coming on, the SECURITY light will come on and disable the vehicle.
In my case, I just have to disconnect the negative battery cable for a few minutes, re-attach and the car will start.
Please post up if you solve this one. I just spent $100 on a PKE fob that is too light to use as a paperweight.
This happened to me last week on my 94 vette. I tried to program a new FOB key and the PKE light did not come on and flash like it was supposed to and then the car would not start. I had the car towed to a local shop and the shop said that the ignition switch had gone bad, so they replaced it and it started, then they tried to program the FOB key and it went into the no crank, no start option so they unpluged the battery and then pluged it back in and the car started after the no crank no start state that it was in over the weekend. Then they bought a "new" FOB key from the local chevy dealership and it caused the same no crank no start situation. They then unplugged and replugged it back in about 1/2 an hour later and it started again. But still no FOB key is working. They seem to think that it is somthing between the theft deterant module, body control module and the engine computer that is not working right. It is going into a shutdown mode and thinks that the car is being stolen whenever someone tries to program a PKE remote key. I got the car back and now I am living without a keyless entry. Would replacing the PKE module solve the problem?
Maybe it would be a better option for us to look into after market PKE/alarm kits? I think they are about the same cost as just a PKE fob, and would be a stand alone kit and easier to trouble shoot.
I asked the shop that did the "repairs" on mine and they said that it would mess with the VATS system. I don't know if that is true or not. All I really want is the keyless entry with the ability to pop the hatch without opening the doors. I don't need the PKE system.
You can interrogate the PKE system by using the same method used to recover codes. I have a scan form the 95 FSM that might help. It's probably also good for the 94.
