i also heard something about carbon fiber, something about a C/F drive shaft being more able to "wind up" than an aluminum/steel shaft

so this probably would apply to the half shafts...

PS: do the Viper half shafts really fit a C4 ?

No. The viper rear suspension is significantly different. The half shafts in the viper are not also used as an upper suspension arm, as they are in the C4 Corvette.

I haven't broken a half shaft, but I've broken 5 or 6 outer spindles.

There is a forum member here who broke a couple carbon fiber half shafts with pretty modest power (less than 600 RWHP) so I think some custom chromoly ones are the way to go if you plan on trying to build a bullet proof independent rear.

I've found a solution to the spindle problem too, but I'm not sure about the forum rules for me peddeling products from a non sponsor. Shoot me an E-mail if you are interested.

I've heard that the c/f ones don't handle a lot of power and also break,or shatter.
try denny's nitrous ready shafts.

Not sure why I twisted this one off at the track. I'm only making about 300hp at the wheels and almost 400tq now. Wheel bearing when out also, maybe it went out first and then took out the 1/2 shaft.

I started this thread to try to determine where to place the half shaft loops but in this case it wouldnt have mattered where I put it. WOW how much damage happened.

Just the wheel bearing and the 1\2 shaft. It broke at launch and I shut it down fast.

AAA covered the tow to a buddies house and I picked up a hub at NAPA and WDO-MKR came through on a good used 1/2 shaft.

Any of you guys running stickshifts?

Or otherwise not taking slack out of drivetrain before launch?

The halfshaft splines are a slop fit into the bearing hub. There's all kinds or other play in the drivetrain too if you let the engine compression brake the drivetrain at all when staging.

I am a stick, but I think most of us with repeated drive train failures are.

I've tried everything I can think of to remove slack from the drive train. I've even tried overpowering the emergency brake to stage the car. I still only average about 4 passes before breaking a spindle. I do have a McLeod clutch in my car though, and it seems most people with a McLeod break spindles. The new spindles I've found should hold up though, so I think I'll start breaking half shafts next. Only one way to find out though!

Yes, Yes most lilely.

19 year old parts in the rear and new FBody steel flywheel with a kevlar clutch.

I know better but sometimes I just can't help myself.

I have found that if you put the loop just about 8 inches over to the right and left of the pumpkin on eather side it will keep the half shaft from breaking the buckets in the back,it will still booger up the bottom of the car.I have not seen any prameters to follow when it comes to breaking a half shaft.I do align my front and rear every 6 mths.I have broken the shafts at 400 hp and at 800 hp and nothing seems to point to any reason they break.
My last one I did a burn out and bounced the car to see if it was going to hook. That was in January, the car hooked and shot toward the tree when I was on the tower side and when the half shaft broke it shot the car towards the tower. The impact was so hard on my helmet it spiderwebbed the helmet when it hit the roll bar and their was 2 inches of padding on the roll bar.You can't say any one thing is breaking the shafts.I have the denny's in the car and they weigh 12 lbs more than the stock half shafts.I always make sure the car is streight when I take off and when the shaft broke in January I was just a little off of center.
That was the first time I was paying attention to catch that the car was not lined up right and that may be the reason it broke.
It's just a crap shoot with these cars.I do have a spool and carcreations
rear with the zr1 rear spring.Good luck
