Default 1992: rough idle when warm??

My '92 runs like poo. I took it out Friday and once it got warmed up, the idle was horrible and surging, like it was gonna lurch forward and take off. It never died. The plug wires have maybe 7000 miles and were installed in '98. My pals said it sounded like it had an exhaust leak on the right side. would a leak on the right side between the header and head make it run that bad? I pulled it out of the garage to make room for other tinkering, and it seemed smoother, but not great. help?

Lots of things to check:

Coil, coil wire, plug wires, plugs
IAC, ICM, MAP sensor

Of course, check everything for good tight connections

ANd check for historical codes

Yes, an exhaust leak upstream of the 02 sensor can cause faulty readings to the computer, which in turn gives incorrect instructions to the injectors, etc. Scan it for codes and see what you get.
