Default L98 Cam

I know that there are a ton of threads about this but they are not really what I am looking for.

I have a 1989 L98 with (http://www.melroseheaders.com/produc...ystems/c-4.php) exhaust, and will be putting 1.6 rockers. what I want is a loud cam with improved power with stock heads. if necessary I may port some runners to match the bigger flow.

PS It may be overall benefiting if someone has some info as to the decrypting a cam spec.

We need more information. If you want a lopey camshaft, you will need far more than ported runners to feed it.

If you have a stick you could go with something like a TPiS ZZ-409 and reinforce your valvetrain. Your intake and heads will hold down performance until you go to a better flowing setup.

Default cams

cams don't make noise unless they are losing a lobe, and then you can hear them tick tick tick.
exhaust mufflers are the noise quieter, or enabler.
cams also make the engine noticeably rough idling, and certain ones can kill all your low speed torque.

GM ZZ4 cam and valvesprings should work fine, cheap and easy to find.

And a good tune (chip) to go with it. If you are looking for that lopey sound at idle, you could just pull off a spark plug wire .

So your saying if I remove my 306 degree cam and install a factory 195 or so degree cam, my exhaust won't get less noisy? hah!

Every 'kid' in the world who does exhaust mods, find out sometime later on when they swap the cam how much louder + faster the car gets. And the old saying goes, 'the faster it is the more noise it makes'. Its true.

I think this is what the original poster meant. More 'overlap' little more tone. Cam will do that.

Of course, his TPI intake and 113 heads aren't gonna help much with his power goals.
