I'm the original owner of a 95 coupe 6-speed with 106,000 miles. I have been the only driver, car has had normal service history, no accidents. Recently while accelerating in 2nd gear the ENTIRE electrical system shut down, almost with a bang. Coasted to a stop. No electrical dash, lights or anything - completely dead. About 20 minutes later some dash lights came on briefly then went away. After being towed home and about 90 minutes of time, the electrical system was back to normal, as though nothing had happened.
Does anyone know what one / single item could temporarily fail to shut the entire electrical service down? The two Chevy dealers in my (Valrico, FL) area don't want to even look at the car! Any ideas?
I had this same thing happen to me on my '89. This happened about 5 min. after I was driving in the rain/puddles. I was sitting in the drive thru at the bank and the whole car just died -- no power at all. I had it towed to the dealer right down the street from where it died.
The dealer didn't look at it until the next day -- the car started right up for them when they went to investigate. $100 later they said the car got wet and that's what did it. They told me that this stuff happens to vetts all the time because they are so low to the ground/close to puddles.
I got the car home and put it up on my car trailer, climbed underneath and looked for arch marks....I found arch points on body and the hot lug for the starter. This was what caused my instantanious electrical short!...so I got out my tube of RTV and covered the entire 12v lug connection for the starter. I've never had a problem with shorting again.....I drive through even bigger puddles these days without any fear.
