Alot of women and male sports car buyers that want the sport-look, but don't care about the actual performance buy Mustangs. I think the Pontiac Grand Am and Grand Prix are better suited to the Mustang class. Few of the newer Mustangs I see, rarely have a V-8 in them.
1. Ford does indeed own Jaguar, as well as a significant part of Volvo. SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE.
2. And yes, you heard correctly in regard to the HP on the Viper....500 is the number, but not until the 2003 model year. 500 ft/lb torque as well.
I think the comparison started in the 60's when the Shelby's used to race in B production in the SCCA. Then it transferred onto the street with the Mach 1's and Shelby's duking it out with the Big Block 'Vettes and other notable "muscle cars". I feel that ever since then the two cars have always been "enemies". Mustang guys hate 'Vette guys and so on.
Granted the 'Vette really is in a league of it's own, the Mustang guys still try to compete with us. Case in point the addition of IRS on the newer Cobras.
Mustangs are game for the Camaro and Firebirds, not the Corvette.
If FORD evolved the Thunderbird the way GM did the Corvette, then I could see a comparison, but it looks like the only American car I would consider competition is the Viper.
But that's just me.
Sure you can buy a Mustang cheap and make it accelerate as quick as a vette, but you can do the same to a Camaro.
Of course with GM stopping the F-body, the Mustang won't have any competition.
That pretty much nails it. So few people ever realize that Mustang was never intended to compete with the Vette.

Do not be surprised if the 2003 Viper comes out at 525hp instead of the initially anticipated 500. They are seriously worried about the C6 coming. Dodge was supposed to bring out the new Viper at 500hp for two years, and then bump it to 525 the 3rd year out. With the C6 rumors going around, they are seriously considering skipping the two year intro at 500 to try and help keep themselves ahead.
That is very interesting, Scorp. I am anxious to see what they actually end up turning out. :yesnod:
I had seen the "unveiling video" for the 2003 Viper where it was stated that the HP would be at 500, so now you have sparked my curiosity. I guess I'll have to wait a while to find out, though.
The first thing my brother did when he picked up his new C5 was to change his plate that was on his Camaro (GTKILLR). The vette is and always has been in a league of its own. :chevy
As for the ownership issue, I think the most difficult one to follow has been the Ford-Mazda relationship. It seems like Ford's ownership interest has gone back and forth over the years. The Flat Rock MI plant is now called "Auto-Alliance" and produces both the 626 and the Cougar. As an intersting side note, they are also designing producing the new Mustang (Bye-bye Dearborn!). :smash:
If you were a Mustang owner and your car could beat a Camaro it didnt mean that much. But if your Mustang could beat a Corvette now you had something.
They are trying to mod there cars up to a level above what they were intended for. There are a lot of backyard mechanics out there that can take the Mustang up to a level we are already at. I dont see the point in doing that. Why throw a ton of money at a mustang to make it compete with a vette. Just go get a Vette. Then you really have something. A few low dollar mods to a Vette and the Mustangs are in the dust again.

Because it's cool making something slow fast as all hell. I know someone that used to own a low 13's 1/4 Volkswagon super beetle. the first 1/8th the front wheels were off the ground so you had to make sure you were lined up straight! :D
I spent a weekend in October trying to get past a 2001 Mustang Cobra in my stock 1994 LT1. We diced it up for 2 hours on the 1.8 mile road course at Texas World Speedway. At the end of the day I had the faster lap time but he was still in front of me. On the long straight, he was slightly pulling away from me, in the twisty's he had his hands full and I was all over him.
I'd say that because of the cheaper cost, the Mustang gives quite a bang for the buck and is therefor very popular. I'm not speaking for any other Corvette owners but before I got my Vortech I wasn't sure I could handle many Mustangs I ran into on Saturday nights. With the announced demise of the F-Body, I'd say the Mustangs are setting their sites on the next likely target, bone stock C4's.
Now I'm looking for some payback against that same 2001 Mustang on Nov. 24th...... :)
I'm not sure what point you are questioning about (I don't have a stang) but I'm not so sure it would take a brand new stang to compete with a 7 year old C4. In my case, it just happened to be a 2001 I was chasing, but it could have easily been a 94 Stang with a 302 that was modified and the results might have been the same. All I'm saying is that with the relatively low cost of horsepower available to the Small Block Ford Mustang community, it seems likely IMHO that bone stock C4's would be competitors for them from their perspective.
Vector cars are American. They have chevrolet drivetrains ( modified ) and are made about 35 minutes away from my house, just south of Orange Park, Fl.
I applied for a job with them once a few years back.

How long ago was this?
Are they still there?
I know at one time they were owned by the same company that bought Lambo from Chyrsler.
I know this part is OT, but if anyone has some current info, it would be nice to know.
Oh, and while I'm at it, does anyone know the web address to McLaren's F1's. Not the race site, but the production site. Trying to hunt down a pic.
E-mail me! Thanks.
