Has anyone replaced the glass hatch in a C4 and tried to keep the original painted piece with the third brake light to put on new glass?
I've been told it's a difficult process but I need to do it and need tips to not break glass.
Thanks
I don't know about the light thing but the "hatch release hook" pannel just unscrews. I used a "shorty" type screwdriver with a pair of channel locks gripping the handle for leverage. Go slow....apply firm pressure and don't let is skip out of the bolt's head. I've popped these out for the window tint installer guys several times with no problems. I've never messed with the "hinge side" of the glass hatch but I'm sure it comes out in a similar fashion just unclip the gas struts. The glass is heavy so get some additional help "many hands makes light work."
Its glued on with the same stuff that glues your body panels together. If you seperate the 2, you may have a hard time re-ataching and making the hatch align when you close it. If you have to do it, broken glass maybe, the bonding glue can be gotten at body shop supply stores. Fusor makes it. Comes in 2 tubes that mix together in the tip of a special gun. Click my vette pics to see how I know this.
I thought they used the same adhesive they used on windshields. At any rate, you have to cut it off. Plan on it taking a long time, and using a wire saw.
Just about everytime I sell a rear glass they almost try to remove the panel to install the original one to avaid painting the one on the glass. They always come back to buy a new one afterward. Just unscrew your halo plastics unbolt the glass at the hinge. No drama no alignment issues and you don't have to spend money on the new adhesive.
