Wonder if someone can pinpoint a problem. I drove my c4 for a couple of hours today. The car was nice and hot but normal. My girlfriend took it in town (4 miles) to get pizza and when she came out 15 min. later it would not start. I went to help and sure enough enough it would not start. The electrical system worked fine, had the clutch in all the way but the starter would not engage. I let the car sit for about 2 hours and then it started fine.
I figure either the clutch starter switch or the starter interrupt relay is the problem and got to hot. ?????? Where are these located. I assume the clutch starter switch is on or near the cluch pedal.
Since the 85 didn't have VATS, you don't have to worry with the pellet in the key or the VATS.
The clutch switch is located at the top of the clutch pedal arm. You will have to remove the driverside hush panel to see it. You can disconnect if from the switch and "tie" both wires together to bypass it.
The start enable relay is located behind the DIC where you see the seatbelt and SES lights appear. You can "tie" the first and last wires together and bypass it. Also check/clean the connections at the starter.
Oh, and the thread title should say "85 wouldn''t crank"
It is the relay all the way to the to the right once the DIC panel is off. It should have two heavy guage yellow wires, one green with white stripe heavy guage wire, and one small guage green wire.
My 85 did the same thing everytime it was heat soaked. I could normally get it started by hitting the starter with a big wrench a few times then starting it.
I changed the starter and put that heat shield wrap on it. Haven't had a problem since (keeping my fingers crossed).
