Default Need help on telescoping mechanism.

Have this 89 that the previous owner replaced the steering wheel on. The problem is he did not make it so the telescoping feature would lock. I have an exploded diagram so I seem to have all the pieces.

I cannot figure how it is supposed to lock, and the center bolt is very difficult to screw into the spindle shaft.

Can anyone tell me how it's supposed to be set up and or post/send a pic of the hardware with the horn button removed?

It seems that the 89 is different from the 84-88's so I need inf/pic from an 89.

Thanks.

Have you removed the horn cap and tele lever? If you tighten the big screw, will the tele lock into place? I am on my second '89.

If your 89 is the same as my 87, the lever in the center locks to the left, but if its not bolted to the tele rod cam in the steering it won't work... the FSM has all the info need to do the job.

I cannot get that center screw thing to screw in all the way.

Anyone know the purpose of the metal rod inside the shaft spindle?

All 84-89's are basicaly the same. The metal rod is pushed down into the shaft against a key that cams against the side of the shaft and locks the mechanism. There is a "star" screw that screws into the shaft against the rod, forcing the cam. The lever is screwed onto the "star". Sometimes they willl screw up the threads in the shaft when they use a wheel puller.
