I want brand new BLACK carpet (of course). Where do most people buy carpet from? I see Eckler's and MAD have complete carpet kits for $500 which probably means someone else out there sells the same thing for ~$200 less
Do these kits usually include door panel carpet? I just installed a pair of door panels from an '84 but they need some carpet.
What is the "mass back" that Ecklers and MAD offer and is it worth the added cost?
I'd like to do this right and get some good carpet that won't fade prematurely and won't ignite if someone drops an ash on it (I don't smoke but y'never know). I don't wanna pay an arm and a leg but I'm willing to shell out a little bit of cash for the "good stuff" :)
Just replaced the carpet in my 92 vette. I bought the carpet from eckler's due to customer service. ACC makes the carpet and you will find that there consistency sucks. I have had multiple sets of carpet from them. All the sets have had different cuts/shades of colors which did not fit nor looked correct. Ecklers has responded well to the problems. The mass back is much better than the non massback. the carpet holds its shape better and also provides sound/heat reduction. All I can say is it was worth the 200 dollars extra for the customer service. After 4 months it is finally done.
I just got mine from MAD. The massback is the soundproofing, I don't know if it is better or not. I just installed the back section which was easy, and I installed it over the old soundproofing. I still have to tackle the front section, which includes the door panels. I will let you know how it goes
gonna have to do mine soon if I keep it, what a ripoff on price no matter where you buy it ,$ 4-500 ,you can get a good bedroom carpet for that price, other cars that take more carpet cost less than a vette, whats the mark up or reason why so much, same for steer. wheel rewrap $2-300, compare that to a leather jacket, just doesnt make sense.. :mad
I bought mine from 1aauto.com. They sell the ACC carpet, which is the same manufacturer TLD, Ecklers, and others sell. But these guys said they sell a better version of it, so called 'Custom Comfort' material. It's denser than original, so will wear better and fade less. I always thought the original C4 carpet was crappy looking (I bought an '85 new, and that was something several people commented on when they first got in). This is better looking carpeting because it's denser (but still far short of what you find in premium cars nowadays). It does however pass as original looking.
Perhaps ACC has switched over completely to Custom Comfort material, so that's what you will get from any source that sells ACC. I don't know. I did know that 1aauto.com was the only source making that claim, so I bought from them even though TLD would have been cheaper. (complete C4 coupe set, mass-backed, was about $465 from 1aauto).
The mass-backing was thick and heavy - should help with noise. All pieces had the mass-backing on it. When I took out my original carpeting, only a few pieces had mass-backing - most had only a thin plastic backing. The molded pieces I got, for the most part, were cut very well, incl. the positions of the holes for the rear speaker grille screw posts. The only thing that wasn't perfect was the 'L' shaped edges of the console side panels. Their edges didn't match up that well with the edge of the console side panels. When gluing the carpet on, I stretched things enough so it doesn't look that bad. But I'm just being a little **** at this point.
I have updated photos for my web site (below) but can't upload them because CorvetteForum home page editing is down. But check back every couple days.

I have heard of a few others with the same problems.. I must have gotten lucky.. mine fit.. no problems
I got my set from MAD, but that was almost 3 summers ago..they got it from Johns Corvette Care or it was a drop shipped item.
I got all black and it was very good.It had all the pieces such as the dash knee panels and door panels etc.
The weave was far better then stock..not shaggy looking at all like the GM one is.
Mass backing was thick rubber.
Only gripe, the drivers side plastic footwell piece did not have the "Corvette" name embossed in it.
I didnt care since floor mats were going over it anyway.
I converted from saddle to black and originality went out the door anyways.
The rear piece one is a long one piece in the trunk going up the back wall where the shade mounts.GM uses a thin 2 piece set up here.I think this one piece carpet for the trunk floor and wall looks better.
The trunk wheel well pieces came nicely formed but you need to carefuly cut out the speaker holes for the back and cut notches for the roof brackets back there tofit through.
I dont know if MAD is still using Johns Corvette care anymore...Ive heard there were problems with delivery times and some customers not being happy with the overall fit.I guess it depends if you get a good pattern or a bad one.
Btw I didnt install the door panel carpets that came with the kit.My door panels are too broken and cracked to even bother.
They also look too much of a hassle to change them without breaking the panels somewhere.

Actually, it's not that hard at all really. The design that they used to affix the door panels is actually alot better than most of the cars I've seen before. You just remove all the screws at the bottom, the 1 screw at the rear of the panel, and the 2 screws in the armrest insert, and then lift up on the panel. Make sure the doors are locked cause if not, the lock-arm will get in the way. Once you have the panel seperated, you have to unplug the electronics. You'll need something to pry the door lock switch with... don't use anything metal Once I learned this I used a plastic mechanical pencil to pry with :)
A,
Taking the panels off is easy, Ive done it many times.I do all my own repairs as well.
What im getting at is they panels become old and brittle and theyve already cracked in various places.
The GM carpet is glued on and held in the back of the panels by staples.
Trying to get that off on an old panel is a sure sign of cracking something, esp in my case.
The door panel carpet that came in the kit is far better material then whats on the door now.
But they sewed a black vinyl bottom to it that requires one to fold it back under the door panel edges and attach it that way.
The way they did it kinda suxs.I did a trial fit and it left a big round ridge along the edge.Id prefer a carpet with No vinyl sewed on and fold the carpet back over and glue in place that way.
If the kit you get has this, youll see what I mean.maybe they just sewed mine wrong.
Btw if you need any install tips, post them when you go do the resto work.Ive done the whole thing and its easy but spend a weekend doing it right.Ya need time to clean the car out and all the dust in there and time to allow the glue to dry.
Ive got some tips Ive learned along the way as well.
Good luck and hope the carpet set is just what you wanted and the install goes smooth.
