I have a 1992 vette, and I notice while driving it tends to move from side to side in the rear. Has anyone had or is having this problem? If so what could be causing this to happen? One person told me to check the tie-rods in the rear. I did, and found no play in them. Please help if can. thank, Daniel
I think I have the same problem. On acceleration the rear end goes out to the right, and when I let off the gas the rear end moves to the left. It feels weird. There are plates you can buy to tie the driveline down a little bit at http://www.zfdoc.com/c4beamplate.htm I checked the bolts on my car and they were pretty tight though. Maybe bushings? I need shocks as well.
If you find anything out, I would like to know also. Thanks
1. rear wheel bearings
2. rear shocks (if busted the rear hops sideways when you hit a bumb)
3. rear tie rod center bracket (it might have cracked or split, dangerous)
4. check if the rear end is still attached to you car
5. rear sway bar attachment, excessive sway could feel like sideways movement
6. rear wheel alignment, they might not actually move sideways but only feel like that
Worn bushings can also cause sideways movement and misaligment.
Mine did this when I first bought it and everyone told me tie rod ends. Ended up being a bad u-joint on the inside of the passenger side halfshaft. It would slide the headlights over a good foot at 40 feet out when you deperessed the gas pedal doing 60.
Mine was loose rear tie rod ends and a very bad alignment. Mostly the tie rod ends. Make sure they are tight, but don't back off the nut to align the hole for the cotter pin -- that leads to the looseness. Back it off and start over again till the hole lines up the first time. Just go slow and it'll be tight. Then have the alignment checked...
