Default Plug Wires.

Its just too damn hot to attempt changing them right now, but I also don't want to spend the $$$ that someone else wants for labor for something I'm sure I can do myself.

My question.

Stock LT4 wires. What should they ohm out at? I want to know if they even need to be changed.

......i don't have that info but, how long ago have the wires been changed?.......how many miles on same?.......if it's been a while in time or mileage, why not change 'em?

they're original, 83k on them. I know they need it but its either several hours in the 108* heat index, or $400 that I don't have.

I'm wondering what they should ohm out at so I know if I have enough time left in them to where I can wait for it to cool down some or if it needs to be done soon.

Default wires

wires from the facrtory usually ohm out at 500-600 ohms per foot.
High perforance wires such as granatelli are 5 ohms per foot.
Taylor has some at 50 ohms,
most HP wires are at around 150 per foot.
the lower the resistance, the moe they cost.
The granatelli wires for an LsX engine are around $300 and a gen I are the same

right but as you lower resistance you also lower electro magnetic filtering that can creep into other parts of the electrical system where you don't want it, IE the stereo.

So 5-600 ohms per foot, I believe the average run on the LT should be roughly 2 -2.5 so 1500ish should be within reason.

I'll check it tomorrow

......$400 for wires and changeout?....what am i missing here?...i've an 88 and i imagine the wires are different but, "not to the tune of that cost!".....ii am in florida so, i know about the heat index, etc.....however, i did mine at 8am in the morning and my wires cost under $50.....

You've got a 96' which is about 11 years old. Why not wait another couple months (October), the temp will be in the 60's and do it then?

The books says the maximum service life is 60,000 miles, but many give out before that.

They're a pain to replace, but I wouldn't let a shop rape me over the coals for $400 bones, either. It took me about 5.5 hours to change both passenger and driver side on mine.

Be sure and replace the O.E.M. wire holders/separators, too, as they get brittle and crack when you go to replace them.

$400 is way high considering that good wires, like Taylor, are under $60.
Changing wires on an LT1 with the proper tools and a little experience takes about an hour and a half. I wouldn't think an LT4 would be much longer.
Even if it takes 2 hours, that would be a shop labor rate of $170 per hour, a little high......

Exactly what I planned on doing is waiting till october or november and do it then, the only thing is I want to be certain that they will be fine for that much longer.

I honestly don't know why I'm worrying, if they've lasted this ling, another 2-3 months probably wont make a difference.

They're really not that bad to change out on C4s so long as you put the front of the car on jackstands and remove the wheels and access panels that're directly next to the control arms. I could prolly do a full plug change on a stock manifolded C4 in an hour or two. Gotta love thos accesspanels that let you get your arm right in there.

Both, plugs and wires. I'm talking about an LT1. Just pull the wheels and the control arm access panels.

Other than a little difficulty getting the wires past the pinch point near the front of the engine I don't think it's that much of a PITA.

Try installing a cam on a C5 (I've been doing one this week).
