Probably the idler pully. You can use a yard stick or something; put it to your ear, and CAREFULLY probe stationary areas of suspect items. With the motor running of course. It will amplify any noises.
can it still be the idler puller if the noise is still there while i'm driving. the noise is there at idle and when in drive
Absolutely. The idler pulley has nothing to do with the car being at an idle. It is a pulley that helps to route the serpentine belt amoungst the various accesories. If bad, it would make noise at idle, in drive, or while cruising down the road.

i drove the car today. the noise was there in the morning but wasn't there when i drove home. i tried this a few minutes ago and put the stick on areas of suspect, they all made a different sound. what should i be looking for?

The one you're concerned with ... It should be apparent; as you said, they all sound different
Could be the smog pump, replaced mine after the same type of noise and its gone.
My smog pump crapped out and make a weird noise around the belt area. I've also have had the bearings go bad on the tensioner idler pulley. You can buy just the idler tension pulley (with new bearings) from NAPA for around $20. The pulley is cheaper than the smog pump....a good place to start. Put a new "S" belt on the car is your unsure of how many miles are on it.
.....if you are not sure exactly where the noise is coming from, remove the belt and start the car briefly...once you can determine that it is coming from the engine compartment, reaffix the belt......i had a similar noise on my 88 and i removed the idler pulley and replaced the BEARING and reinstalled it all in 20min.....if your belt appears to be worn (cracked at edges or rows worn) replace that.....any rotating mass can be the source.....
