Yesterday i changed my oil, and now i hear a knocking/rattling noise somewhere around the engine. I have NO clue what it could be, and anyone i have talked to has a few ideas, but not sure either. So anyone have suggestions?

Do you have engine oil pressure...? Does the noise sound from the top of bottom. Does it increase-decrese with engine speed.

yes there is oil pressure, that seems just normal. when i changed my oil, the oil filters were different size, but also from different manufactors. The noise happens quite often, but not all the time. the sound almost sounds like it is coming from the bottom, but i am not 100% sure. The noise goes away when i am traveling at city speeds and highways speeds, but when i slow down and stop, and take off, that is when it is most present.

Get a small section of hose (1/2" or less diameter) about 3-4 feet long and use this as a stethoscope place one end in your ear and use the other end on the engine to try and find where the noise is located. BE CAREFULL of the BELTS .

When you say the oil filter is a different size, is it the same diameter; just longer or shorter than what you had? Are you sure that the new filter is for your car, numbers on the filter match those on the box?

It's hard to help pinpoint noises over the internet. It's just a guessing game for us. I assume the car was not making the noise before the oil change?

correct..and the thing is...the temp of the car really didnt change too much, so i am guessing the oil filter didnt make a difference...but what could it be? the only thing different was the oil filter. Is there a chance that something got into the oil? but wouldnt the car automatically sieze up? im sorry i have so many ?s, im only 17, but i am thanking you for all the replies!

What brand/weight oil and what brand filter did you use? Are you sure nothing was dropped in the oil filler hole when adding the oil? Did you check the oil filter for any shavings before screwing it on? Anything funny looking about the oil that was removed?

I would suggest to change the oil filter since it's easy and cheap.

Go back to what you had before and eliminate the change as a variable. I have no idea what it is.

Default I Hope Your Is Easy Fix Like Mine Was!

I've had the serpentine belt strech so far that it made the tensioner bang on it's self...and make a loud tapping/knocking noise that sounded like real engine trouble....it only did it at low RPMs and at idle. Check your belt as it may be stretched too far....if -- so replace it with a new belt.

I was also thinking the tensioner. Being that the noise comes and goes is strange for a motor problem ( internal ).

If you can find a way to duplicate the noise, eg... In park at 1200 RPM or what ever the case may be. Get the noise to happen on command.

Then pull the belt off the motor, and try to get it to happen again. I would hold off on driving around much until you find the solution.
