I have an 88 Vette that the transmission went out in. It has the 4+3. My question is...is it better to convert the thing over to a six speed or try and find someone that fixes the one I got.

It depends on what you want. Fixing your tranny would almost certainly cost alot less than a 6-speed conversion. There are only 2 6-speeds that I know of that people commonly use for this conversion: The ZF6 offered from '89-'96 in Corvettes or the Richmond 6-speed which Eckler's sells as a kit though both would require some work... What exactly is your tranny problem?

Well, here's the deal....I bought this car a few mouths ago. It had 70K miles on it..and I got a great deal as well. But since then the clutch went south...then the U-joints and now the Transmission. So as you see, I am getting tired of spending money on this thing and getting any of the cool Performance stuff that I want, like an exhuast. Anyway, from what I can see it looks like the seal busted between the front and the rear of the trans...which caused the gear oil to leak into the transmission fluid and from there it just burnt up. I ended up tearing up the gears pretty bad in the front. I have yet to crack open the +3 side to find out. The story around here is it can cost a bunch of money to replace. I found a guy in New York at a place called SK Speed, who sells a rebuilt 4+3 for $2500 or a 6 speed for $3000. From what he says, the six speed is a kit that comes with everything needed except a speedo cable. The bellhouse, flywheel, linkage, spline, etc. all included in the price. I just know if this is good idea.
I've considered swapping in a 6 speed myself. The 4+3 seems like such an overcomplicated way to increase the number of available gear ratios. It's also not very robust from the factory.

Is that $2500 price an outright buy or is that yours in exchange? The OD is a solid unit when you rebuild it with all the upgrades. I think it's a waste of money to rebuild it to stock specs.

Yeah, Ecklers carries it. You'll have to modify your transmission tunnel also. The other stuff that comes into cost is how much labor you're willing to do.
