Hi,
I've been thinking about getting one of the hand held diagnostic computer interface units but then I remembered I have a laptop collecting dust in the closet that might fit the bill and save me a few bucks.
I am currently trying to track down a minor idle stumble that so far has eluded me and throws no codes. I still have a list of things to try (thanks for all your assistance) but think that this might make this job and any future jobs MUCH easier. I don't feel the need to do any computer programming changes (I'll just call Ed, I trust him more then me:)) but if the option was there I might take it, I'm just looking for more of a engine monitoring program where I can get the low down on the engine and associated component operation.
I know that there are a few "homebuilt" programs out there that are free or low cost, and there must be some cable pinout diagrams out there somewhere that I haven't found yet. The homebuilts are more spreadsheet/text based and I think I'd like more of a graphical interface.
Questions:
Would you go the cheap route or spend a few more dollars and get a commercial product?
What programs do you like the best and why?
Any good web pages someone could point me to for topics like this?
Can I get something that would be compatible to the wifes 98 Chevy Cavalier?
What should I be aware of or look for before buying one?
Does anyone have a setup that they want to sell? :)
I've been considering the Ease software. I think there is a post in the review section under Tool & Shop Implements for the Ease Scan Tool. I thought at one time there was a forum member who was able to offer a discount to other members. Also here is a link for a cable maker. If anyone has experience with this product I would appreciate your opinion. http://www.geocities.com/steve3034/cables.html
