Default Coolant temp problems

I noticed that the last two days my coolant temp climbs up to 210-220 within a couple minutes of driving doesn't over heat just runs at those temps. I checked all my levels and there all where they should be. What could cause this? A vaccum leak maybe.

This is a very normal temp for a stock C4...the radiator fan does not come on until you get even hotter.

I know that the fan comes on at 225 and is always on when the air in on, but it didn't start get that hot that fast until the last couple days plus when the temps did get that hot they dropped off pretty fast once the car gets moving now it just says in the 215-220 range

Crawl under the front of the car and look up into the radiator inlet area. Make sure there isn't a plastic bag or other debris clogging up part of the radiator fins. These cars will suck the leaves right off the road when the fans kick on high.

Your right, 215-220 is too hot while it moving over 45 mph.
It should run in the 192 - 197 range with the factory thermostat.

How come the 160 thermostat doesn't make the car stay at 160F? It must be broken.

I started the car a let it warm up to 160 and grabbed the upper radiator hose and could fell the coolant flowing through so the thermostat is working

Your ride is normal. If the normal temps bug you, try:
New radiator cap
New hoses, upper and lower.
New tstat. (160 degrees)
Full engine/radiator flush and replace with 50/50% of Dexcool and distilled water.
Pull your radiator and give it a good cleaning with a high pressure hose.
Purchased a "Big Mouth Air Dam".
At this point and after four beers and running six miles at the beach, I foreget what else.

Thanks for the advice like I said before radiator, water pump, thermostat, cap, and hoses are all under six months old. The reasons I'm thinking vaccum leak is because I can hear a hiss some where around the drivers side valve cover. The car also over heated about 2 weeks ago due to the alternator pulley falling off the car got to about 270 but there hasn't been any problem until now

Default temp

i concur with the fan picking up some debris. I shut the car off at work (white painted concrete floor) and noticed tiny leaf fragments falling out from under the car when the fan finally quit.
I'd check there first. Low speed air does not flow easily when debris can be the culprit.

Unfortunately that could be the clue, you may have lost a head gasket. Try pressure testing the system to see if it leaks down or test for exhaust gas in the cooling system with the dye kit. Certainly hope I'm wrong, good luck.

I was thinking the same thing. When he said the temp went to 270 and then he had a hissing noise and overheating, my first thought was Head Gasket. I also hope im wrong....

I think I have discovered the hissing sound. I think it's coming from a intake manifold bolt the one on the back drivers side I think coolant is hissing from around it. I don't see anyway I can get to it without removing the runners. Also where can I pick up the dye kit?

Hope that intake leak turns out to be the problem. I think NAPA carries the combustion leak tester, but if not here is a link.
