Speaking strictly from TPiS header installs. With a lift, easy. Without a lift, a bit more of a bitch to get the car high enough. I've done it both ways and 46.5 out of 46.499 times would do it on a lift if it's an option.

Not too bad the other way though.

I've never been an exhaust expert in regards to design and I've tried a billion different combinations.

Lately, I've been told that by a few guys including CF members that long tube headers, and big pipes, free flowing exhaust would be more QUIET than stock manifolds or shorty's, and stock diameter tubes. I dunno. Perhaps they are right?

I can tell you this much. I have hooker 2149 long tubes. I have the leaky flanges cut off, and flowmaster ball n socket connectors welded on. I have
true dual 2 1/4" exhaust which goes into an H pipe right around where the transmission tail shaft is, then it goes into two converters, and then into two turbo lt1 style mufflers. (ecklers).

It's loud . Not soooo much outside the car, well. you can hear me about a block away. Inside the car the drone is just. horrible. I'm seriously thinking of just using stock manifolds or shorty headers, though everyone says it will get louder..

Ok, now to answer your original question. On my lift it took about 20 minutes to bolt up both sides w/ the manifolds already off. You just lift them up, start a few bolts to hold 'em, then lower the car down and tighten from up top. I couldn't imagine doing it on jackstands due to the angle you have to turn the header to get it in and past the control arms.

putting 2149's in is a piece of cake.....getting everything off/out of the way, and tightening number 8 is the PIA.

That was the first thing I did back in 89. It's not too hard. Just need time, patience and lots of wiggling. I jacked the car up and put cement blocks under each wheel. A lift would be godsent but not nessacary.

Best I ever ran on the stock L98 with LPE longtubes was 13.9

I put Hedman's on my '85 on jackstands. Took about a minute per header to put it up in place with a bolt holding it. One of the easiest header installs I've ever done.

What do you consider "big" pipes. 2 1/2 is plenty big. The cats are what quiet down the noise and the mufflers give it the smooth tone. Maybe you should go to a lower sounding muffler. Turbo muffler sounds like it would be loud. Got a sound clip?

What do I consider big? I dunno, aything bigger than 2 1/4 I guess. I've always kinda gone by 2 1/4 if you have duals, or 3" if you don't. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm not an exhaust expert.

I took the motor apart tonight so no sound clip. when I'm done my T5 swap i'll post something.

The make of the headers may make a difference - a brace on my passenger side had to be cut a little to get my EM longtubes on my 85

silver86 and I intalled his tpis headers. It was easy. Maybe 30 minutes to install. And that was taking our time. The car was on jack stands.
