Default Tranny clunk between 2 and drive

Hey guys, I have a clunk that happens between 2 and drive and once in a while when the converter locks up. I originally thought it was doing it between each gear which made me think it was a u-joint, but it really isn't clunking between the other gears, just a fairly positive shift. After driving it for some time now, I've decided it is pretty much just between 2nd and drive. Any ideas as to what would cause this? I have done some searching here, but have not found this exact problem.

Thanx for any help,
Dennis

My 89 is doing the same thing, when it shifts from 2nd to third it clunks and sounds like a u-joint. If I get on it a bit it doesn't do it , just when im cruising around. I hope someone can chime in because it annoying. Its been on a lift and I didn't see anything loose or with excessive play.WW

I had some clunks on up-shifting and downshifting from 2nd to third. I found the following problems: bad half-shaft u-joints, bad drive-shaft u-joints, loose c-beam bolts on the transmission side. RR alls these issues and the majority of the noises are gone. I would check all these areas on your car.

Check your wheel bearings in the rear for too much play, when moving the tire at the 12 and 6 o-clock positions. Finally, plan on putting some anti-seize paste on the spindles where they slide into the bearing another common area for clunks on C4's. They tend to develop some rust inside.

After you check all these areas...Then maybe look at the trans for some shifting issues.

Hope this helps

Thanx, I will get back under and see if I can find anything. I never checked the c-beam or the wheel bearings!

WW, it sounds like yours is doing the exact same thing as mine!!

FWIW... I could not tell my u-joints were bad until I took them apart. Look for alot of rust by the bearing cap. Inside the trunion caps my needle bearings were all rusted.
