Default Anyone using TCI Torque Converters?

TCI offers the Breakaway Conveter at 2400 stall and another at 3000 stall, none in-between. Just curious if anyone is using either of these converters and if they have been ok in thier car.

Thanks Pete,
I wasn't sure, but thought I'd ask.
I sent you a PM a couple weeks ago, regarding a TC, but I haven't been able to follow up. I'm still looking for something to hook up with my new LE heads and cam. Let me know what you can do.

Thanks,
Don

Don,
It was my honest opinion, based on many failed units. TCI is the reason I started having my converters custom built.
Anyhow, I did not bash them to promote a sale, but because I was burned. Any converter you buy will likely be better than TCI though.
Anything I can help with, I surely will.

I wouldn't get a TCI. Even SLP, if they still offer one, would be better. Me, I went for a Precision Industries one where they will restall it within 2 years once for free.

I ditched my TCI 10" 3000 rpm stall because it kept on shuddering while the TCC was commanded by the ECM to lock up. I also kind of felt it ate up my fuel economy a bit. I'm now using a 12" stock sized custom built torque converter I got locally, modified to stall at about 2200-2400 rpms. Lock up now works perfectly for now...

I trust Pete K with giving good advice.. I heard the same about TCI when I was looking.. I think the majority of the people on the forum usually recommend one of these three options:

1. Vigilante (Precision Industries)
2. Yank
3. Pete K's Custom Converter guy..

I really enjoy my Vigilante! 2800rpm stall and drives around like my stock on did.. Very nice street manners.. Its in my daily driver!

TCI is a POS company with POS products. Back in 94 we bought a TCI tranny with a TCI converter and it lasted less then 1K before it self destructed and they refused to warranty anything. It was for a friend and he just wanted to move on but I would have taken them to court.

I went with a B&M Holeshot 2400. I am very happy with it.

Default Tci

I am on my 2nd 3000 stall with lockup..they replaced the 1st one with a $125 charge. I also get a shudder during lock up. I hope it last longer than the 1st on.

I hear TCS (look on Web) makes an awsome unit, however I believe they charge for it.

FWIW: I took my TCI Breakaway into a local torque converter manufacturer, Midwest Converters for unrelated reasons. The owner showed me how there were spot welds at four places where his company welds all around the perimeter. And inside there was a paper lining around the edge, where they use some carbon fiber deal. He said the inside parts were adequate.

I bought my converter from Petek and couldn't be happier. It is a
9 1/2" converter with a 2600 stahl. Never had a problem with it or the tranny he built me.

I am running a TCI 3000 stall lockup convertor behind my 406 and I never had any problems. At least 10,000 street miles and 100's of 1/4 mile passes.

Assuming the stall speed of my current combination is correct would another convertor give me better performance?

I've had a 2800 stall TCI converter in since spring of 2005 when the transmission was rebuilt. I have not had any problems with it. However recently I have noticed a clanging noisy from under the car only when I put it in drive. It is also intermitent. The other day I was on the side of and looking under the car while someone was in it with their foot on the brake. I had them pull forward a couple of times but it would only do it for a second then stop. I have not been able to figure out where it is soming from. It is driving me nuts! Could this be a failing converter? It is very noticeable from inside the car when it does it. I have to put it in neutral at redlights to get it to stop. It only occurs at a stop and while in drive. It cannot be heard while moving or while in neutral or park. I tried to record some video of it with the camera one night but I believe the sound was flushed out with the loud exhaust. Converter issues maybe? How can I test for this?

Thanks
