Does anyone know what is so special about the fuel level sending unit in a 1988. Everyone seems to have units for every year available but the 88. Can I convert the sending unit if this item is really hard to find?

by the by,
I installed a 90 unit in my 86. The newer unit has more stiffeners on it, and an aditional ground wire. The hookups were the same except the 90 unit has the extra ground wire installed in the connector.
Since I have gone from before your year to after your year, any year from probably 88-90 would probably fit without modification if it has the 3 pin plug at the tank.
It reads full all the time, even when I had to add 8 gallons to fill it up. I added some Seafoam to the tank and it did bounce back and forth between 3/4 and full for awhile. It is back to reading full all the time now.

Thanks for the help Coupeguy. I am going to pull the unit out this weekend, and I will check the the plug. I read a tech article on cleaning the contacts and resistance wiring. I am going to give it a try before ordering a "90".

....send me your e-mail address in a pm and i will e-mail you some "material" in the morning.......later...
Sorry that I am learning how to use this forum. I am a rookie. My dash fuel gauge reads full, even when I have to add 8 or 10 gallons to fill it up. I put some Seamfoam in the tank and filled up with Chevron 93, and the dash gauge bounced around some but finally stopped at full again.
Cleaning the contacts on the fuel gauge sending unit if the first step. Once cleaned with high grit sandpaper and WD-40 use an ohm meter to test it before putting it back in the tank. If that doesn't work, you will need to replace it. They run around $250 new or find a used one for less than half.

Sniper,
Give me some advice on where to find a 1988 unit. I can find plenty 1984 through 1987 and from 1989 on. I can not find one specifically for a 1988.

I did the repair procedure in the tech list, helped somewhat mine now reads full until about half a tank then reads correctly so I'm not messing with it anymore.
I just reset my trip odometer each time I fill up to track my mileage vs fuel gauge. I can go safely 250 miles around town, 350 miles highway before refueling. This way in case it goes out again I won't get stranded.
I should probably get one now before they are discontinued by GM. Eh hum......gmpartsdirect.com
