Some time ago there was a thread about possible engine fires as a result of breaks in two small rubber fuel lines that connect the metal fuel lines on the frame with the metal lines to the engines on L98s. I am thinking about replacing this part of the line as a precaution, and am wondering what others have done, as this isn't an off-the-shelf part. As I recall, the article mentioned some fixes, but the main thrust was to describe the problem.
I have not heard of any engine fires as a result of a rubber fuel hose leaking. In fact i'm not sure there even is one on these cars. I do know that if an O-ring breaks that can cause a fire from the resulting fuel leak. It almost happened when one on my fuel rail broke, it was smoking from dripping on the exhaust.
The thread you speak of was started by VtVette, he had one of his fuel lines break, and replaced it w/ braided line. He was going to post what size line and connecters he used, but I have not seen anything.
In fact i'm not sure there even is one on these cars.
If you follow the fuel lines from the fuel filter on the front frame rails there are 2 rubber lines that connect near the lower front of the block. From there they are attached to the solid lines that come up in front of the motor. A continous solid line would not be able to compensate for engine movement.
I replaced mine several years ago, with SS braded line from the filter up to the fuel rails. I think I got the fuel rail to 6an from Street and Performance. I will try to look for all the fitting info, but I ran it up the frame under the AC box along the frame rail and then up to the fuel rail. No problems to date.
Here are a couple of pics. I'm still looking for my receipts to confirm the PN's. I do remember buying the Accel fuel rail fittings and one of them was the wrong size. (I think the '88 and newer versions use 5/16" for both rails and earlier models used two diff. sizes.)
It's hard to tell but I cut the metal line about 4" from the filter and used compression fittings to mate the hard line to the -6 fittings from the SS lines. I bought everything from Jeg's and it wasn't too expensive. Now they even have Black or dark red fittings to choose from.
These fittings fit the fuel filter and the return line coupling below the FF, so in that case you would need to order 2 sets of these to go to your stock TPI fuel rail fittings -
you will need -AN fittings and 10' of -6AN braided hose, or 5' of -6 for the supply and 5' of -4 for the return, then if you go -4 you need to get a reducer from -6 to -4AN for both ends of the return line.
yea this is a really scary topic, the other day when i started mine i noticed some smoke coming from the engine, upon investigation the metal fuel rail was touching against my header and had burned causing fuel to spill all over my engine. luckily i caught it early. Moral of the story.....check ur lines once in awhile hahaha
