....it happened again......I payed to have my oil/filter changed and got into the old discussion about how much oil is correct for an LT4......
After the discussion with the service writer the mechanic puts in about 5-1/2 quarts!!!!! LT4BUD of course goes ballistic because one thing for sure is this is an overfill!!!
The mechanic stands his ground and says he put in 5-1/2 because that is what it took to reach the full mark on the dipstick...he then tells me that the oil filter he removed was incorrect (I don't know the number, but it was a Fram that I put on) and the one he put on was larger and took more oil..
So my question is what oil filters are you folks using and do proper filters exist with different capacities???
BTW This was true in the past for another non-Vette car I owned...two size filters, one took 1/2 quart and one took 1 quart..

That is the important part -- that he filled the crankcase to the full mark. I worked on another vette and noticed it was over-filled (by the mechanic who changed the oil). At least your guy checked the stick.
I'm not sure about the LT engines, but I know most older Chevy small blocks take a Fram PH 30. The PH 13 filter has the same threads, but is a little bit taller and holds a little more oil. The PH 13 was usually used on trucks and vans, but I've used them in place of the 30 as well. Just using the Fram part #'s as an example.
I've been using AC Delco lately, but I forget the part # off hand.
5.5qts sounds like a bit much. However, the easiest thing to do is go check the level. If it's at the full mark, you're fine.
Regarding different filters...yes, you can use filters with different capacities. I use a filter that is shorter than the stock filter because I have a sandwich adapter that fits between the filter and the factory offset adapter. The sandwich adapter is for the lines that run to my aftermarket oil cooler.
I only use K&N oil filters on my LT-4. They're great filters and they have that 1-inch hex head built into the bottom of the filter which makes removal a snap. I use slightly less than 5 qts in the crankcase, probably 4-3/4 qts on average. Bo

LT4Bud, I'm not familiar with the PH 3980. Obviously that's a different filter # than the small blocks & L98s take. It's possible your filter also has a cousin that's the same, just longer, kind of in line with what your mechanic was saying. If that's the case, I don't know the part #.
....i use the taller/longer purolator oil filter ........as i see it, while it will hold a bit more in capacity, it has a greater surface area for filtering
Tall looks like it'd filter better with much less pressure loss.
The factory L98 and LT1/4 filters are not interchangeable. The LT1/4 have large barrel cats near the engine. As a result, GM used a narrow filter and an offset adapter to move the filter closer to the block.
If you remove the cats (ie to install LT headers) and the adapter, the L98 adapter and filter will work just fine.
The shorter filter I use is the PF47, it's ~1.5" shorter than the PF52 which works well with my sandwich adpater that is roughly 1.5" thick.

I did mine this weekend. K&N HPS-2001 with 5qts Mobil1 5w-30
