Default Master cylinders for late C4s

Hi All,

I need to know what year (or years) C4 came with a master cylinder that has a ONE piece plastic reservoir and NO hose nipple on the side of the reservoir.

My hunch is that the answer is '95 and '96 but I need to be sure before I lay down money to buy one.

What I believe to be true is that '92 thru '94 master cylinders all have the style of reservoir that includes the hose nipple. I can't use one of these.

I'd be ever so grateful if you'd take a look at the master cylinder on your C4 and tell me what you see.

Thanks in advance,
Jim

perhaps this will help. Did this recently related to another thread about brake solutions:http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...hlight=booster

C4 Master Cylinder (there were at least 4 different Master Cylinders !!!):

1986 = AC/Delco # 174-830
1988 = AC/Delco # 174-831
1989-1991 = AC/Delco # 174-820
1992-1996 = AC/Delco # 174-828

and yes, the 94 has the double-chambered resevoir with the side nipple for a hose to run to the ABS unit.

by the way, you could use acdelco.com to see the pictures of the above part numbers.

Interesting thread. I had no idea C4s had such brake issues. On page ~7 there is a pic of the MC with the nipple.... clearly the one I don't want.

1992-1996 = AC/Delco # 174-828
According to my NAPA parts books, there were 7 unique master cylinders (and of course there are no accurate pictures in the application guide so I can visually identify the MC I need).

by the way, you could use acdelco.com to see the pictures of the above part numbers.
Two problems here... first, 92 thru 96 are listed as all using the same MC, in contrast to info from NAPA,.... second, and frustratingly there is no photo available on the AC Delco web site for the MC for the 92 thru 96 application.

So, I'm back to square 1.... can anyone just go look at their '95 or '96 and confirm for me that the MC on their car does NOT have the nipple on the side of the MC reservoir?

Thanks,

Jim

I have a 96, and I'm almost 100% sure that I don't have a nipple on my MC (just did front brakes yesterday). I can look for sure when I got home tonight.

Jim,

I know that this is probably not much help other than to eliminate one model year but, I checked my '93 and it has the side nipples. I took the liberty to check several on on-line sources (Including NAPA) and all of them show the same brake master cylinder for 1992-1996.

Norm.

I have a 94 Vette and it has a 1 piece reservoir and the (drivers side) nipple. Hope this helps.

I had not covered a couple of years in my list of MC. Here are the extra ones -- which may then bring the quantity of MC equal to NAPA parts books:

1984 = AC/Delco # 174-836
1985 = AC/Delco # 174-840

Regarding the 1992-1996 MC (ac/delco # 174-828), sorry I didn't notice this before, but there are two different reservoirs, one of which might NOT have the nipple as you wish:

1992-1994 & 1995(LT5) = GM # 12512995 (this one HAS the nipple)
1995(LT1) & 1996 = GM # 12524134 (nipple? -- unknown)

Default Master cylinder found!

My sincere thanks to one and all who responded to my plea for help. Turns out the '95 - '96 master cylinder is, indeed, the one I needed and my local NAPA store found a brand new PBR MC for me. It's on the car and working well.

Many thanks,

Jim
