Hey Guys! The electronic climate control in my '89 is doing the light show routine where EVERYTHING is flickering making it impossible to tell the set temp or what function is currently operating. I understand this is common on these units. If I press the outside temp buttom or even apply pressure to the screen around the temp button it will usually clear it up after several times. It is much more persistent when the car is cold. All the functions operate properly at all times. I have found numerous "how to" articles pertaining to fixing a cold solder condition that developes in later models but no info for one as old as mine. If anyone knows how to fix one of these please let me know. I will need pictures to identify what you are talking about because I am stupid. Is my unit considered a C68 electronic control unit? Thanks a bunch!
Remove the control head, use a Q tip and electrical contact cleaner and wipe all the pins on the connector on the rear, plug back in and see if you still have , "musical chairs". If you do, then take the unit apart and use the contact cleaner on the circuit board contacts after you unplug the printed circuit board, put it back together and test it again. If it still is playing follow the leader, then it is time to exchange it for a rebuilt one.
I feel like a big dummy! I discovered that the C68 is simply refering to the option code for the electronic climate control. It's usually posted on the underside of your center console lid or anywhere that lists the options. The actual configuration of the electronic mechanism must vary though from year to year as the one that I found pic's of online with the guy working on it looks somewhat different from mine. I tried the spray/clean method - no improvement. I took it apart again and was a little more aggresive with it, useing 400 grit sand paper on the contacts followed with the Q-tip and cleaner and it seems to have improved quite a bit. I also flooded the push buttons with the contact cleaner and blew them out with compressed air and they feel better. The unit was acting a little funny so decided to put it back in and leave it alone for awhile to see what it does. Dave
