Default How many of you are making over 700 rwhp?

Having a hard time making the hp I think I should be making and was wondering if my combination is screwed up or if it is something else (e.g., like trying to tune my own car). I would appreciate hearing from you on you setup and boost levels. My setup is:

forged 396 9:1 cr
224-236 114lsa @ .624"
AFR-220 head with additional port work
LT4 intake with port work
58mm throttlebody
long tube headers 1 3/4"
D1SC making aprox 18 psi
meth injection (no intercooler)

what power is it making?

because I see no reason why that combo should not make that, at the least at the flywheel it should.

auto trans?

I pulled 667 @ 18psi through a TH400. with 93 octane
my street tuneup isnt even close on the dyno. that is alot of the problem. mufflers may have been choking me also.
if you are using a wideband its alot easier, if not you will have to just keep pulling the plugs .
I would look for 11.5 to be safe and as much timing as it will stand

if all else fails and you cant get a good dyno reading take it to the track

Hi Joby,

I notice you use E85. I am planning on going that route for next year on my set up, and ditching my A2A intercooler in the process. How hard was it to tune yor car using E85? Do you think you need your intercooler? There was a guy on Youtube that made over 1100rwhp with an old Camaro with no intercooler at 26psi.... on E85.. I'm a believer.

e85 gasoline. That's awesome. I wish there were more stations that I knew of that had e85 over here because I'd change over too.

Is there a performance advantage to using E85?

The upside is that it ranges from 100-105 octane, it's a mixture of 85% ethenal and 15% cheap unleaded gasoline (in some states they also have 90/10 or E90). Given the lower btu rating of this mixture (approximately 66% of straight gasoline), you need to burn about 30% more to make the same power. Curerntly Uncle Sam subsidizes this product in hopes of weaning us off of the OPEC teet. So now it's about $2.30/gallon at least here in Indiana. Also, given the chemical properties of alcohol and given the fact that you are using 30% more of it, and you quickly realize that you can run some serious boost with this stuff as well as having your engine run anywhere from 10-20 degrees cooler. It's kind of like alcohol intercooling on steroids, at least that's how I understand it. I would LOVE for Greg from Blowerworks to pop in here and provide us with some real science on this..

Using the same amount of air you need more E85 for a stocastic mixture (50% more weight which is 40% more volume as E85 has higher density). Because of the lower energy content in E85 the engine will make almost exactly the same power on E85.

You see the large gains with forced induction and that is for two resons.
1) E85 has higher octane than gasoline.
2) The cooling effekt on Ethanol is much higher. Combined with the fact the more E85 is used the cooling effekt on one gallon of air is about 4 times higher with E85 compared to gasoline.

The result is the the engine can handle much more boost without detonation and that is where you find more hp compared to running gasoline.
